Thank you David T. Hsu for sharing this opportunity to hear and learn from Michèle Lamont, Judy Morse, and others this morning. Belonging is a fundamental human need, and one that is linked to many complex challenges of our time, such as health, social cohesion, and democracy (see Over Zero's #BelongingBarometer). Yet, a majority of Americans report non-belonging. On a positive note, belonging is attainable. Ordinary universalism refers not only to what we all have in common, but also to embracing ethnic, religious, national, and other differences. Respecting people's dignity is crucial to advance this work forward and can help promote a pluralistic criteria of worth. If you're curious to learn more, consider Lamont's book "Seeing Others": https://lnkd.in/g33t3ZRG
Excited to join this conversation at The Brookings Institution with Michèle Lamont, Judy Morse, and our intrepid convener/moderator Xavier de Souza Briggs. As the #BelongingBarometer (s/o Over Zero) shows, we live at a time in the United States when large swathes of people in demographic minorities *and* majorities struggle to feel seen. What will it take to build a society with room for all of us to belong -- to be safe, seen, and have every voice matter? There are so many bright spots to learn from. At Omidyar Network, we learn alongside artists who stretch our moral imagination. Innovators who rewrite old playbooks. Builders of social infrastructure to strengthen our changing communities together. Register here for the March 4th IRL or webcast: https://lnkd.in/gp57mc4Y
