Another #TidyTuesday: This week we have a tricky dataset. Participation in this Campus Pride🌈 Index is entirely voluntary, according to their website, and the actual rating happens entirely based on self-reported information. A mediocre rating thus still signals at least an interest in equality and a willingness to provide a honest assessment of what they offer. Any really hostile institution is unlikely to actually provide any data. Thus I am not looking at the actual ratings and instead merely depict whether information was provided in the first place. Interesting article exploring how young people make sense of their rural identity. Implications for rural policies: 1. Rural young adults can have parallel future horizons - importance of flexible futures and opportunities 2. Maintaining a rural location for mobile young adults - supporting functional rural identities 3. Promoting regional rural identities to raise awareness of the benefits that access to both rural and urban areas can bring 🌱How can insights like these support recruitment and retention of young people in healthcare careers in rural areas? 🌱How do we privide flexibility of future horizons and access to rural and urban benefits? #ruralhealth #ruralhealthcareers #ruralcommunitites #ruralEurope #stayingrural
How do rural young adults negotiate their rural identity in different future horizons? This paper presents insight into how rural young adults in the rural areas of Oost-Groningen, The Netherlands, and Südharz, Germany, deal with their rural identity with regard to different future horizons. Based on 15 biographical interviews and a survey to geographically contextualize these interviews, the results show how rural young adults can have parallel future horizons to maintain several options open in which they all aim to preserve a rural identity.

Did you know that 119,000 young people (aged 14–26) were either at-risk or disconnected in 2022? This figure includes 63,000 disconnected young people with limited connection to employment and education, of whom 12,000 were severely disconnected, meaning they were not employed/enrolled in a workforce program and had not attained a high school diploma or equivalent. It also includes 56,000 at-risk high school students who were exhibiting warning signs that they might not graduate high school, which heightens risk of disconnection.
