In honor of National County Government Month, we're continuing to highlight each of the county elected positions in Idaho. Today we're featuring county sheriffs, and we're dedicating this post to the late Deputy Tobin Bolter of the Ada County Sheriff's Office. The Idaho Constitution (Article 18, Section 6) and state law (31-2001 and 31-2003) establish the office of sheriff, authorize sheriffs to appoint deputies and clerical assistants. Sheriffs are elected to serve four-year terms. The structure of the office of county sheriff could change if a county chooses to adopt an optional form of county government. The powers and duties of the sheriff may be organized into the following categories: 1. Police powers 2. Jail-keeping powers 3. Powers as officer of the court and process server 4. Drivers’ licensing 5. Other miscellaneous powers such as the duty to return to the state fugitives from justice through extradition proceedings Please join us in thanking our county sheriffs and their staff for their bravery and unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe. King County Government 101! Interested in learning more about the differences between City and County government? Councilmember Zahilay made an excellent breakdown of those differences that you can watch here: https://ow.ly/SvPl50QQpOf Executive: Ensures that county laws are implemented, boss of King County sheriff's office, plays a big role in determining the city budget, oversees county agencies, including county jails, and directs the administrative structure of the county. Legislative: Creates and passes county legislation and policy, reviews and approves the city budget, holds transparent government meetings, and modifies county charters. The judicial branch is involved in district court (misdemeanors, civil litigation, vehicle towing, infractions, foreclosure, etc), superior court (felonies), and juvenile court (all juvenile cases).
