Feature Presentation at Infraday Florida - Feb. 8 - Miami -www.infraday.com/florida - "South Florida's Climate Resilience Tech Hub" - The Economic Development Administration (EDA) designated South Florida's Climate Resilience Tech Hub in October 2023. The Tech Hub's vision is to lead commercialization of resilience technology globally. The EDA Tech Hubs Program is a federal program that aims to strengthen U.S. economic and national security with investments for regions to become global leaders in innovative technologies. The Climate Resilience Tech Hub, led by Miami-Dade County, is powered by a consortium of universities, corporations, startups, workforce providers, economic development agencies, local governments, labor, and resilience organizations. It will drive economic opportunity to underrepresented communities by advancing the resilient workforce of the future and accelerating market-ready solutions through an entrepreneurial ecosystem. The hub’s initial focus is to expand decades-long work on sustainable resilient infrastructure and clean energy in response to our changing interaction with water, driven by extreme weather, rising sea levels, and intense humidity. This presentation will detail the why, how, and who of the Climate Resilience Tech Hub. Great conversation last night on the importance of creating a sustainable and climate-resilient ecosystem in South Florida... The energy was palpable in the room as mayor Francis X. Suarez and Francesca de Quesada Covey shared their vision for building the region as a global leader in climate tech. Here are my takeaways 🤝 Collective Responsibility: A sustainable future requires everyone in the community to come together and make smart investments now about the economic growth and opportunities we was to see in the future. 🌐 Local Talent, Global Impact: South Florida has the potential to not only become competitive in the technologies and industries of the future... It has the potential to be THE place for climate tech and talent across the U.S and across the globe. 🌱 Economic Opportunities: As a designated Tech Hub we have a responsibility to Increase the economic output by multiplying any federal funding we’ll receive from EDA to make sure we are building the strongest community and ecosystem we can. 📚 Education & Workforce Development Leverage public/ private partnerships to create an ecosystem that empowers people all the way through their education journey and ensures everyone in our community has access to great education and equitable jobs. The Biden-Harris administration, through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, announced the designation of 31 Tech Hubs in regions across the country. #31WavesOfImpact The newly created Tech Hubs program is an economic development initiative designed to invest in high-potential U.S. regions. It also aims to transform them into globally competitive innovation centers. The South Florida Climate Resilience Tech Hub, which focuses on sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure, led by the Miami-Dade County Innovation and Economic Development Office, focuses on sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure. New introductory Live Labs video published – a new short video has been released, which gives an overview of the Live Labs 2 programme. ADEPT Live Labs 2: Decarbonising Local Roads in the UK is a three-year, UK-wide £30 million programme funded by the Department for Transport that aims to decarbonise the local highway network. ADEPT is collaborating with proactive local highways authority-led partnerships, working alongside commercial and academic partners across the UK to develop and implement zero carbon and climate change focused local roads plans. Seven innovative Live Lab projects are working across four interconnected themes. This is not just a nice concept; it is a powerful necessity because the key challenges of our generation are systemic: achieving net zero, climate resilience and the circular economy are all systems-level challenges that demand systems-based solutions. Therefore we must use all the means at our disposal to understand our built and natural systems better and to intervene more effectively. This includes making much better use of data and digital approaches such as developing ecosystems of connected digital twins. This presentation will briefly explore the connection between outcomes, systems and interventions and make a case for advancing systems-thinking and driving systems change in the built environment. In the UK, all buildings must achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, the UK Green Buildings Council estimates that 80% of the buildings that will exist in 2050 are already standing. This presents a unique opportunity for universities and research institutions, which are increasingly seeking urban locations to attract global talent, to reintegrate scientific discovery into our cities. How can we facilitate the relocation of scientists and researchers into the heart of our towns and cities, knowing that this idea will contribute to the development of a flourishing community of experts? The Francis Crick Institute, opened in 2016, serves as a prime example. Its establishment has spurred the growth of numerous science companies in the Kings Cross Knowledge Quarter.
