July is a month we celebrate our nation's past, and look back on the events that have brought us to today. Much of that past includes haunted history and there are plenty of ghosts said to haunt our nation's capitol, Washington D.C., including the ghosts of the White House. Ghosts that are said to walk the halls of the White House include Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, his son Willie Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson. The ghost of Abigail Adams is said to both act as a guardian to the White House, appearing in moments of crisis, and a helper with domestic duties. Her ghost has been seen by staff doing laundry, which Abigail herself took care of when she lived in the White House. Abraham Lincoln is a frequent presence in the White House with Presidents, First Ladies and even foreign visitors claim to have come across his specter in the White House. He is known to haunt the Lincoln bedroom even though he never slept there during his time in the White House. One famous encounter occurred when Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands was staying at the White House, she reportedly heard a knock on her door and upon opening saw the ghost of Abraham Lincoln wearing his top hat. The sight of him caused the Queen to faint out of shock. During President Lincoln’s first term in office, two of his sons: Willie and Tad both fell ill from typhoid fever. While Tad recovered from the illness, Willie passed away at the tender age of 11. President Lincoln and his wife Mary were grief-stricken at his death, and it is reported that President Lincoln cried copiously for his young son. He was temporarily buried on the White House grounds as his body was later exhumed to join his father’s in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL. Of the numerous Presidents whose specters haunt the White House, none is more boisterous than that of Andrew Jackson. His ghost is often heard swearing and stomping around. His loud laughter can still be heard coming from the Rose Room or the Queens Bedroom where Andrew Jackson used to sleep.
