It’s that time of the year again! Looking back on this year’s English light novel debuts, there were a handful of titles that I was really looking forward to but which ultimately disappointed me (Agents of the Four Seasons, The Ephemeral Scenes of Setsuna’s Journey, and Days With My Stepsister, to name a few), but I was also blown away by some unexpected surprises, which I’ll talk about below. This was a good year for romances, interestingly enough. 5) If the Villainess and Villain Met and Fell in Love Print and digital from Yen Press. To be honest, the villainess genre is oversaturated lately, but the premise of this one intrigued me, and I’m really glad I gave it a shot. Both leads are very archetypical characters here—Brigitte is an innocent victim who did nothing to deserve her reputation as the villainess, and Yuri is a guy who seems cold at first glance but is actually a sweetheart—but the important thing is that they play off each other very well. It makes for a charming romance. The story begins with some ridiculously awful crap happening to Brigitte, but fortunately, the story isn’t a downer. After getting dumped by her dickhead ex-fiancé, she picks herself up, doesn’t wallow in self-pity, and immediately finds new and healthy goals. It’s honestly not the most realistic depiction of a girl who has had her worldview shattered, but not every story of this kind has to be dark and brooding. The appeal is in the light-hearted romance and banter anyway, which it delivers in spades. 4) “To Me, Who Loved You” & “To Every You I’ve Loved Before” Print and digital from Seven Seas Entertainment. This sci-fi romance duology is like the Pokémon Red and Blue of books. You can read them in any order for a standalone love story which complements the plot of the other. The gimmick works because the guy has two different love interests, whom he devotes himself single-mindedly to depending on which book you’re reading. You don’t feel like you’re treading the same ground all over again when you pick up the other book, nor is it difficult to grasp what the “point” of the story is. It also helps that the two romances play out very differently. One is a tragic tale about a guy hopelessly trying to save a girl who is doomed to die in every universe (think Steins;Gate), while the other is a mundane story about a couple who experience universe-hopping as part of their daily lives but generally try to stick to the same universe. Taken together, it’s an interesting way of thinking about relationships, because it implies that people can have more than one soulmate, and even if you meet your soulmate, you won’t always become a romantic couple. 3) You Like Me, Not My Daughter?! Digital-only from J-Novel Club. This is a story about a twenty-year-old guy who has the hots for a thirty-year-old woman. Before you protest, “That sounds cursed!” remember tha

5 brilliant novels told from a side character’s perspective https://ift.tt/byxi2Oq We often see ourselves as life’s main character and sometimes we are. Other times, however, we’re a side character in someone else’s story. We’re not the driving force of important events but an observer of another person’s actions. In such cases, we may not get top billing with our name in the title, but that doesn’t mean our role is unimportant. As these five famous novels show, being the side character can give us access to deeper truths and a richer appreciation of the human condition than those too busy propelling the story forward. From Nick Carraway’s critique of the American Dream to Irene Redfield’s stance on passing all the way down to Charles Marlow’s assessment of the horrors of European imperialism, it is the awareness these characters share from the sidelines that imbue their respective stories with enduring truths and staying power. A photo of Nella Larsen, author of Passing, taken in 1928 by James Allen. (Credit: Wikimedia Commons) Passing by Nella Larsen “It’s funny about ‘passing.’ We disapprove of it and at the same time condone it. It excites our contempt and yet we rather admire it. We shy away from it with an odd kind of revulsion, but we protect it.” This 1929 novel by Nella Larsen, one of the leading writers of the Harlem Renaissance, explores race, sexuality, and gender in America at a time when all three were beginning to experience dramatic change. The story uses the perspective of Irene Redfield, a black woman with a particularly European appearance living in a black neighborhood, to explore the situations and choices of many people navigating race relations in the 1920s. The most interesting of them is Irene’s sometimes friend Clare Kendry. Her ability to exclusively pass for white both fascinates and revolts Irene, who must grapple with her own appearance, her avoidance of passing as white, and how it impacts her relationships and self-identity. Despite Irene’s attempts to avoid Clare, the mixture of interest and distaste Irene has for her causes their paths to continuously cross, impacting both of their lives. As the novel progresses, our understanding of Clare is filtered through her foil, Irene. Those of us who don’t understand the phenomenon of passing in the same way as the author or the characters have it explained to us, in all of its complexity, by a woman who herself has to grapple with it both as a participant and an observer — even if she doesn’t want to. While this book is not yet in the public domain, it will be in 2025. Until then, copies are likely available at your local library. Are romance novels literature? That was the question posed by Casey McQuiston in Time magazine as this month kicked off, and has been on my list of things to vent over ever since. But we get enough of that in US politics right now, so I'll keep this brief. I'm a novelist, but I don't write romance, although I've toyed with some rom-com ideas, and maybe one day... But do I read romance? Yes, but not across all romance genres. But I would never even think of saying that romance novels are not literature. In fact, some of my all time favourite "classics" are romance novels. Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein are incredibly powerful love stories that are as readable today as the day they were first published. The same for most Jane Austen novels, and it was Austen that led me to the modern rom-com genre, fuelled by the Nora Ephron books-to-films like Sleepless In Seattle, and this year I discovered Ali Hazelwood's "STEMinist romance" titles, which are the most fun I've had reading "women's fiction" since Anne R. Allen's Camilla Randall mysteries. The nonsense debate about whether romance novels are literature is echoed in genres I'm more familiar with, and actually write, such as thrillers, which the literary snobs still dismiss as "commercial fiction," but which epitomise modern literature and to me simply suggests the literary snobs are past their sell-by date and need to be put out to pasture. https://lnkd.in/eZxtfWpp

The 1970s witnessed a rich tapestry of literary achievements, with certain books standing out as defining works of the era. Here are the 10 📚 Books That Defined the 1970s, offering a glimpse into the diverse literary culture of the decade. How many do you remember? Annie --- Some books are flashes in the pan, read for entertainment and then left on a bus seat for the next lucky person to pick up and enjoy, forgotten by most after their season has passed. Others stick around, are read and re-read, are taught and discussed. sometimes due to great artistry, sometimes due to luck, and sometimes because they manage to recognize and capture some element of the culture of the time. In the moment, you often can’t tell which books are which. The Great Gatsby wasn’t a bestseller upon its release, but we now see it as emblematic of a certain American sensibility in the 1920s. Of course, hindsight can also distort the senses; the canon looms and obscures. Though the books on these lists need not be American in origin, I am looking for books that evoke some aspect of American life, actual or intellectual, in each decade—a global lens would require a much longer list. And of course, varied and complex as it is, there’s no list that could truly define American life over ten or any number of years, so I do not make any claim on exhaustiveness. I’ve simply selected books that, if read together, would give a fair picture of the landscape of literary culture for that decade—both as it was and as it is remembered. Finally, two process notes: I’ve limited myself to one book for author over the entire 12-part list, so you may see certain works skipped over in favor of others, even if both are important (for instance, I ignored Dubliners in the 1910s so I could include Ulysses in the 1920s), and in the case of translated work, I’ll be using the date of the English translation, for obvious reasons. Below you’ll find 10 books that defined the 1970s. (Head here for the 1910s, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s). ...READ More... #Books #Literature #1970s #Reading
