🚨 Breaking News: Elon Musk's AI Chatbot Grok is under fire for spreading inaccurate election information, causing a significant stir among state election officials. 🌐 Context: When President Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 race, Grok falsely claimed that the new Democratic nominee would miss getting on the ballot in 9 states, including Alabama. However, Alabama's ballot access deadline hadn't passed, and similar inaccuracies were noted for the other states mentioned. 🤔 Reflecting on this, it raises a critical question: How should AI platforms like Grok ensure accuracy, especially when dealing with sensitive information like election details? 🔍 From my experience, misinformation can spread like wildfire, especially when released by influential platforms. AI and tech leaders must make it their mission to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the information they disseminate. 👥 What's your take on this? How can we hold tech companies accountable for spreading misinformation? Around 1 billion voters will head to polls all over the world this year, while wily campaigns and underfunded election officials will face pressure to use AI for efficiency. Why it matters: Conditions are ripe for bad actors to use generative AI to amplify efforts to suppress votes, libel candidates and incite violence, Axios global tech correspondent Ryan Heath writes. 🔭 Zoom out: This year, more people will vote than any other year between 2004 and 2048. It's the first time in 60 years that the U.S. and U.K. are voting for new leadership in the same year, and the first time since 2004 that the U.S. and EU will. Several U.S. states have passed legislation banning or requiring disclosure of political deepfakes, including California, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas and Washington. Legislation is being considered in New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Kentucky. Arizona election officials conducted a two-day exercise in December, designed to help them spot and respond to deepfake videos.

Bad actors are always creative when it comes to utilizing new technologies for nefarious purposes, and advancements in AI also enable committing fraud and spreading misinformation on a unprecedented scale. As there is plenty of publicly available data on high profile figures like Biden, it is extremely difficult to prevent these type of attacks from happening. #AI #artificialintelligence

This is becoming a significant threat much sooner than predicted. There needs to be a concerted effort to combat this and make it very clear an image, video, or audio was created by AI. All platforms need to agree and comply with this tagging and it must be universally enforced. Also reposting must not allow for these tags to disappear. Using something like Steganography to embed these tags in the video, image, and/or audio.
Experts war-gamed what might happen if deepfakes disrupt the 2024 election. Things went sideways fast.
