The Government regularly reviews our criminal justice laws to better protect the public, especially the vulnerable, from dangerous offenders. These refer to offenders who commit serious sexual or violent crimes, such as rape, sexual assault of minors or culpable homicide, and there is a substantial risk of them committing similar offences again (e.g. serial sexual predators). A new sentencing option, where high-risk offenders will only be released if assessed to no longer pose a threat to the public, was recently passed in Parliament. Safeguards will be in place to ensure fairness.

An important report from the Victims of Crime Commissioner. The report provides further evidence of the inadequacies of our criminal justice system. The report highlights the need, and the State’s duty, to reduce secondary traumatisation experienced by victims from their contact with the criminal justice system. Victims are crucial participants in the justice system and deserve better. And the report recommends ways of achieving this that are consistent with and promote fair trial rights.

Success in the criminal justice system should not be measured by arrests and sentences, but by reduction in crime. Punishment doesn’t reduce recidivism. Cycles of crime and violence can be intercepted with victims’ services. We must ensure that everyone touched by violence and crime has the tools and resources they need to recover.
