Matthew Sluka, now former quarterback for the UNLV Running Rebels, has announced that he will leave the school due to unpaid verbal NIL promise. The offer was reportedly worth $100k according to Sluka’s agent, and came from the Rebels offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. Head coach, Barry Odom told Sluka’s father the offer was not valid if it don’t come from him. Sigh. The snowball effect of the transfer portal and the NIL is growing more and more. Without proper sanctioning or guidelines we are seeing the negative impact of the free flowing money that is floating around college athletics. Unfortunately for the Rebels, they lose their starting quarterback in the midst of having one of their most successful starts in the program’s history. The bad news could also impact their value during the PAC-12 battle with the Mountain West conference. Sluka stated he will use his redshirt this season but I asked the question, will coaches still want him after showing he will leave a team mid-season without hesitation. I hope the young man can find a new home but most important, I hope that someone will finally add some guidelines to the Wild West of Transfers and NIL. It’s getting messy out there. What is the benefit of going pro now that college athletes can make a big time profit at the college level with NIL? 💰G League Ignite was truly innovative at the time of its creation because it allowed top high school recruits to profit off their name, image, and likeness immediately out of high school by signing a pro-contract without going straight to the NBA. 💰Before NIL came in to play with college basketball, top players made $0 during their time in college which prompted the best of the best to spend as little time in college as possible. 💰Now that NIL is an option, many top players are actually choosing to spend more time in college because of the huge profits they are making off NIL. Especially on the girls side, femal basketball players like Angel Reese of LSU are deciding on possibly taking a 5th year of college because they are making more money off NIL than they would with a WNBA contract! 💰 Do you feel the NBA needs to offer/market new incentives for G League Ignite now that NIL exists? What is the selling point of a top recruit to join Ignite instead of go to a top college program promising large NIL profit? I’m interested to see where NBA goes with this, and what they plan to do with Ignite🏀 Bill Carter thanks for the read, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this as well! #SportsMarketing #NIL #Sports

I doubt anything catches the NBA off guard. Adam Silver is a sports industry leader I admire (fun fact: we were both in the Sports Business Journal Forty Under 40 class of 2001 - which also included Billy Beane of the Oakland A’s, Brian Cashman of the New York Yankees. Ok that's me bragging 🙄 , onward...) But I'm a little surprised that there are sports organizations, leagues, teams, etc. that have not considered and written a plan in response to NIL. Because it WILL impact just about everyone eventually - whether you are a youth sports org or a professional league. 🚨 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁🚨 My basketball responsibilities are over for 23-24 as our season ended in the first round of the NEPSAC playoffs last night. Sometimes, the ball just won’t go in the basket and foul trouble on a small team is a killer. But man, am I proud of the way this group simply refused to give up. I challenged them in the locker room before the game to think about their ‘why’. Which person or people in their lives would they be playing for today. Many people, particularly these days in youth sports, talk a lot about individual statistics and accolades. “How many points did you score?” And not “How did the TEAM do?” I wanted them to find deeper meaning and motivation and pushed them to play for something bigger than themselves. There are always 5 people on the court at a time in the same jersey. There is always the support of teammates and coaches on the bench. I watched it ‘click’ for many of them in that moment. Stats do not matter. The team matters. The people that love and support you matter. The result wasn’t what we wanted, but it was an incredible feeling to watch them exert every ounce of energy they had for 32 minutes. To hear the girls on the bench encouraging their teammates the entire game. To watch them dive for every loose ball and fight for every rebound. Make the extra pass and pick up teammates when they hit the ground. Sports are so often a metaphor for life. Ups and downs. Highs and lows. This team went through it all. Together. And they became something bigger than themselves. They became a #team. And it was a privilege to be a part of it. Until next year. Go Bulldogs! 🐾🏀 #youthempowerment #youthsports #basketballcoach #basketballcoaching #independentschools #athletics

Author "Choose the Handle that Holds" 2024 | Keynote Speaker| Executive & Team Leadership Coach l Stoicism “Your integrity is your legacy- make leadership a lifestyle, not a job title.”
If you want to inspire people to voluntarily do math - and not just simple math but dig in and DO math- then have a woman break a record previously held by a man. As I walked the dogs before the start of the Hawkeye women’s BB game tonight I scrolled through my newsfeed and saw multiple posts detailing alternative universes in which Pistol Pete could have shot 3 pointers or ones where Caitlin Clark couldn’t have. There were detailed breakdowns with numbers and percentages- almost all in an attempt to discredit Clark’s most recent record. Most recent until just 5 minutes ago when she broke Stephen Curry’s record for most 3 pointers in a season. I’m curious how people will try to discredit that one. How do you spot a champion? They are the ones who don’t place their worth, motivation, and identity on external validations. They know that being invaluable matters more than most valuable. Champions cheer for greatness. Champions want their records to be broken because they want their sport to continue to grow and they don’t base their current or future success on the past. Champions break a record and spend their time talking about how great their teammates are. Champions are human. And the nastiness in the comments on posts about Caitlin is a stark reminder of how much people love to hate. Champions don’t need to break records to know they are great. Yet so many feel the need to break down champions. Caitlin Clark has done so much for women’s basketball, women’s athletics, and for math- her records inspiring so many to take to their calculators with gusto. I don’t personally care about the records, I care about character. My daughters don’t admire the broken records, they admire the champion who broke them. We all know that 99% of college basketball players won’t make it to the NBA. But what are we, as a culture, collectively doing to ensure our athletes have a successful transition? It took me 4 years to write this book but honestly the timing couldn’t be better. I’m excited for athletes, parents, coaches, and organizations to receive this book as it is a must-read for everyone in basketball culture. Most, if not all, of you probably don't know that I decided to get certified as a high school baseball umpire this year. In the 15 games I've officiated this year, I've definitely seen a lot of things. Here are a few that really stick out. First, we really need to make sportsmanship a priority again, and it begins in a few places. First, these kids look up to talent in the Major League Baseball (MLB), and they mimic what they see from their favorite players. Bad behavior breeds the same, and Major League Baseball (MLB) talent needs to take better care. Second, their coaches need to take the same care. Baseball has always been hot-headed, and it's an unavoidable occupational hazard for officials. But sportsmanship doesn't only apply to players, and if a coach is disrespectful, players may see it normalized and acceptable. Third, there is nothing better than seeing parents, family, and fans coming out to cheer a team on. And, again, hot-headed fans are as old as the sport itself. But it can, as I saw tonight, take a toll on players, even those you are there to support. Be cognizant of your words. On the inverse, coaches have an opportunity to teach all kinds of life lessons, many of which I learned myself as a kid. One of those is squashing bad behavior, and reinforcing good sportsmanship and respect, which applies well beyond the diamond, but everywhere in life. For many of these kids, the games they are playing in this season could be the last they ever play on a diamond again. Those experiences, both positive and negative, are the last they may ever have. Being positive only helps to bolster that experience for them. I didn't know until I started this that plate umpires develop a bit of a relationship with catchers at the plate. Every game I've been at the dish I've shook hands with the catcher, exchanged names, and chatted with throughout each contest. Some I still remember their names even. It's well-known that there are a ton of baseball rules, but before getting into this, I had no idea how many mechanics you needed to have memorized. From field positioning to hand signals, who goes where, and why, it was like drinking from a fire hose. Now it's muscle memory. I also had no idea how many traditions exist that are easily overlooked. Things like removing and replacing face masks with the left hand, holding the clicker with the same, as well as facing towards the backstop when cleaning the plate so you don't show your butt. Finally, the importance of being respectful to players, coaches, and the game itself. I find myself calling players sir or young man, and trying to show my best self to these kids, in hopes that one day they find value in giving back the same way I am.
