On November 20, we mark #WorldChildrensDay to commemorate the 1989 adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) – the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history. By ratifying this international legal framework, world leaders acknowledged that all children have inalienable rights. And they promised that governments would ensure that those rights would be protected and upheld. Unfortunately, children today are living in a world that is increasingly hostile to their rights. It is estimated that 400 million children – or about 1 child in every 5 – are living in or fleeing from conflict zones. Many are being injured, killed, or sexually violated. They are losing family members and friends. And some are being recruited and used by armed forces or groups. We must not be discouraged by this, but more resolved than ever to act. All of us at UNICEF and our partners in the private sector must be champions and advocates for the fulfillment and protection of children’s rights. This is the last week of the UEFA EURO 2024, and we want to see your red cards! We were recently sent this eye-opening article by CNN, from the legendary Ethan Zohn, which sheds light on how athletes are deceived, tricked, trafficked, and exploited into slavery. UEFA EURO 2024 starts tomorrow ⚽️ Germany will host 23 other nations at this year's tournament, as they all aim to win Europe's most coveted prize. I've heard a lot about favourites of the tournament, who win the Golden Boot & dare I say, if football is finally "coming home" for England! 🚨 Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence Awareness 🚨 But I'd like to draw your attention to the scary reality of what 4 weeks of tournament football can mean for some... It can mean an increase in domestic abuse! In fact, statistics show that domestic violence increases by 38% when there's a football tournament. As the world comes together to celebrate the Olympics, it's essential to remember those who suffer in the shadows—victims of human trafficking. The unfortunate reality is that human trafficking has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic, and large international events like the Olympics can exacerbate this crisis by increasing the demand for trafficked individuals. The Impact of COVID-19 on Human Trafficking The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified many global issues, including human trafficking. Factors contributing to this rise include: Economic Hardship: Many people have lost jobs and income, making them more vulnerable to exploitation. Increased Online Activity: Traffickers have exploited the increased online presence of potential victims. Disrupted Support Systems: Lockdowns and restrictions have limited the operations The Olympics attract people from all over the world, creating a high demand for services and labor, some of which may be met through illicit means. Traffickers take advantage of this influx by: Exploiting Vulnerable Individuals: Both local and foreign individuals may be lured with false promises of work or opportunity. Operating Under the Radar: The large crowds and busy atmosphere make it easier for traffickers to operate without detection. It's crucial to raise awareness and take action to combat human trafficking, especially during large events like the Olympics. Here are some steps we can take: Education and Awareness: Inform the public about the signs of human trafficking and encourage them to report suspicious activities. Support Organizations: Donate to and support organizations that work to prevent human trafficking and assist victims. Sport integrity issues do not stop at the border, which is why it’s important to be a part of the global conversation about issues in sport. Our Director Sport Partnerships Linda Muir MBA GAICD is representing Sport Integrity Australia at the Play The Game 2024 conference in Norway this week. Play the Game is a platform for raising and developing awareness about critical issues in modern sport. The wide-ranging sessions include embedding human rights at the centre of sport, the problems of the illegal sports betting industry, sexual abuse of minor athletes, the role of states like Qatar and Saudi Arabia in sports, sport and climate change, how to set up an agency to counter crime and protect integrity in sport, and how sports organisations should react when one nation invades another.  You can learn more about what we do to protect sport in Australia: https://lnkd.in/g_mKb7F #ProtectingSportTogether

From the recent buzz of the Olympics, we can all admit that we were inspired by the incredible talent, dedication and sportsmanship of all those involved. In particular, we were impressed by the young people competing for their country, some of whom haven’t even left school yet!📚 Beyond the medals and records, sports holds transformative power especially in Youth Justice. Involvement in sport can help tackle youth crime and violence by offering young people a sense of purpose, discipline and community. 🏅 In May of 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized a joint event ‘Team up against Crime: Strengthening the role and contribution of sport in the context of multisectoral partnerships for youth crime prevention.’🏏🏋🏾🏊🏼♀️ The purpose of the event was to share and discuss successful projects that had used sport to address youth justice and crime prevention, to help shape future initiatives around the world.
