COP29 has set an ambitious target for global energy storage, aiming for 1,500 GW of capacity by 2030. This goal exceeds current S&P Global Commodity Insight’s forecast, necessitating an additional 400 GW of additions in this timeframe. Today, China accounts for over 50% of global energy storage additions, highlighting the need for other regions to ramp up their storage capacity to support this target globally and effectively integrate the growing share of renewable energy sources. To achieve this target, key factors must drive accelerated growth in the energy storage sector: - Policy Support: Removing regulatory barriers like double taxation. - Bankable Business Models: Creating revenue-stacking opportunities and long-term contracts. - Accelerated Grid Connections: Reducing delays for faster renewable integration. Local protectionism in China’s energy sector is often blamed for slowing the transition to renewable energy, but the reality is more complex. While local governments may support coal power to protect jobs, the true challenges lie in systemic inefficiencies and regulatory frameworks. As China pushes for a greener future, focusing on enhancing grid flexibility and operational transparency will be key. Let’s look beyond local policies to tackle the real barriers and unlock the full potential of renewables! 🌱⚡️ #RenewableEnergy #China #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eUGXQ4Yw #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy #GreenTech #SustainableLiving #EcoFriendlyInnovation

#feelGoodFriday #positive sustainability News China is leading the global renewable energy revolution. In 2022 China installed about as much solar as the rest of the world put together. In 2023, it doubled that and is now on track to beat its own target of reaching 1200 gigawatts of renewable capacity by 2030. It expects to meet that target in 2025. China expects its emissions to peak in 2030, then start dropping off. Some people believe that’s already happened (or about to), as their surge in renewables has been accompanied by a drop in steel and cement manufacturing - reducing their overall impact. This is very important as China (along with the US) is one of the world’s largest emitters. It might just give us hope of meeting our targets. #china #emissions #solar

You know that scene in a movie when one side realizes they may have been conned by the other side? When the light bulb goes off? Is that this point for the Western World with respect to renewable energy and China? “China installed 63GW of zero-emissions electricity capacity in the first three months of 2024, as much as the entire NEM of Australia. That represented growth of 35% year-on-year (yoy), building on the 301GW of new zero emissions capacity installed in 2023, which was in turn double the rate of new capacity installs of 2022” This is one of the many incredible pieces of information in Climate Energy Finance's new report on the Chinese energy transition. In the west, there is still debate of hydrogen vs solar vs wind vs gas. This could not only be economically beneficial to them, but be a part of a larger startegy to position China as a new global leader. Thanks Andrew McConnell for the heads up about this.
