I learn a lot about my profession by how I experience things personally, and that extends to my 4 year old daughter. This year, I started taking her to school on a bike, and this image is our typical route with callouts for today's conversations. We've always been "neighborhood adventurers," but I wanted to share how she experiences a commute by bike as a contrast to how kids experience commuting in a car. One thing I've seen--she can navigate this entire route, telling me where to turn. She also knows spatially where her friends' houses are related to our route. She doesn't want to eat a snack because she's busy looking around. But from a professional planning standpoint I want to point out something about bike infrastructure: we do not use a single bike lane, bike path or trail. Not a single sharrow either. While that infrastructure is important, what we see with this is the unsung hero of bikeable and walkable cities: street grids, intersection density and short blocks. I'm able to create a route that feels safe because vehicle traffic is distributed and diluted, and operates at bike-compatible speeds for all except 1-2 blocks. So if you're talking in your comprehensive plans and mobility plans about walkability and bikeability, remember that your humble subdivision regulations are where you create the anatomy of a city to embrace it. #comprehensiveplan #mobilityplan #walkability #bikeability #developmentcodes #urbanplanning #newurbanism
