USAA’s Post

Wonderful initiative by Northrop Grumman 👏🏽 Motherhood is an advanced degree in life. Mothers are pillars of strenght no matter how hard things get. When faced with blockers, we figure it out, we fix the problem. We thrive to do more, to do better and learn to organise ourselves and manage our time in the most effective way. As mothers we have to expand, grow and become more. We develop resilience, courage, empathy and patience, all cornestones of leadership. Companies should amend their policies and practices to support an effective return to work, and foster a culture that values and helps moms continue with their career progress. As moms we become less available, but much more capable.

Veterans Appreciation Month, Day 24 …and together, we go further. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go further, go together.” I do not know the origins of this African proverb, but it fits my mission. When I served, my standard operating window was 12-16 hours a day, and more often than not, 7 days a week. The actual OPTEMPO fluctuated and taught me to be liberal with my time, based on those individuals and tasks of most need. I couldn’t see making a career of such a grind. I wanted to control at least some of my time again. To have a family. To stay healthy. To give back. This is just a tiny cross-section of the military experience, mind you. Corporate life sometimes calls for similar rigors, but there’s no way to make direct comparisons. It just isn’t the same. Possessions are a nice reward, but pleasure seeking and vanity are destructive as a daily practice. True wealth is built by controlling your time, and investing it purposefully. Money can enhance that, but it is a tool rather than a status symbol. Then again, if you want to go fast, you can do it alone with money. That’s “freedom”, for some, along with physical treasures. But the journey is long, so build a tribe. You are not alone, and are meant to go far. ❤️ Be Kind.

🕰🚶♂️🏨 Stepping into History: Reliving USAA’s Founding Moments 📜🇺🇸🔙 🔔 Hey LinkedIn Fam! Guess where I am? The historic Sheraton Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. Yup, the very place where USAA came to life in 1922! 🎉 Major William Henry Garrison gathered 24 fellow Army officers in this very spot to solve a BIG issue: automobile insurance that didn’t break the bank or, you know, vanish overnight. 🚗💨 Their ingenuity? Form a mutual company, pooling their risk. Clever, right? I finally felt that I had found my purpose. Little did I know just how many deep-rooted issues I truly had. While joining the Air Force was great, it couldn’t fix all of my problems. I had buried so much of my earlier life that once all of that shit imploded in my mind, it caused my life to go into great turmoil. Gaining over 120lbs in less than three years is how I covered up a ton of insecurities and self-doubt. I was simply a big body with a very weak mind. It took a lot of self-reflection, hard work, and determination to get to the other side. Throughout this journey I realized one thing, you are truly never done trying to improve yourself. If you are still breathing, it is not too late! Learn to be a warrior in life. Don’t sit down in defeat! If you find yourself getting weaker, become stronger! If you find yourself falling behind the crowd, run faster! If you find yourself not keeping up in school, work harder! Never retreat, never surrender. Never look to the outside for acceptance or approval. Become better than all of the odds in front of you and fuck managing expectations!
