We’re honoring the legacy of our former CEO, Major General Joe Robles Jr., who passed away yesterday. Joe was a Soldier at his core, and his service included multiple deployments and several distinguished honors. General Robles knew what it meant to serve, and he did so every day of his life. He led with integrity and commitment – to our teammates, our members and our great country. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

Remembering when USAA changed the dress code allowing employees to wear shorts. Nobody would wear them, fearing reprisals I’m guessing? General Robles took matters into his own hands, styling shorts and a Tommy Bahama shirt to the office. Sending a clear message to everyone, times were a changing at USAA. His leadership was always the difference. RIP General Robles.

I first met General Robles in 2000 at a Military Comptroller's conference where he was the keynote speaker and I was an invited breakout speaker as a business owner at the time. What intrigued me most about General Robles was his humility. He introduced himself to all of us and treated everyone with kindness. Even on that day when he was the main speaker, he demonstrated servant leadership. He treated everyone with respect and was so gracious. He wasn't influenced by his title and made a connection with everyone. This is a huge loss to the community at large and USAA. He was the embodiment of 'We know What it Means to Serve'. He was a remarkable example of leadership and I was honored to have met him personally. Prayers to his family and loved ones. May he rest in Peace. He will be greatly missed.

General Robles was the best CEO I had the opportunity to support and serve. I will never forget him consistently sharing to always take care of your people first and the financial results will follow. He was a genuine, and kind leader that was brought on at precisely the right time to lead USAA.
