💊 Opioids have claimed the lives of over 800,000 Americans between 1999 and 2023, becoming a substantial national public health issue. In 2023, fentanyl — a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin— accounted for 80.0% of opioid-related overdoses, according to provisional CDC data. How do fentanyl deaths vary by race? 📖 https://lnkd.in/gH5qPHVD

Join us this Friday morning as we discuss the rise in the use of synthetic opioids with our CEO Gary McMichael and a panel of experts from the UK and Ireland. The increase of these types of substance have been a significant concern for public health with far reaching consequences for communities. Families, schools and workplaces may be affected as a result of increased substance use and associated health issues. There have been overdoses associated with these substances which is likely due to their potency as individuals may unknowingly consume lethal doses. Our webinar starts at 10am on Friday 1st March. According to the National Institutes of Health, harm reduction helps people who use drugs avoid negative effects, like infection or overdose. But it’s also more than that. Harm reduction is a public health strategy designed to reduce the negative consequences associated with drug use and alcoholism. It does not necessarily require abstinence, recognizing that, while eliminating substance use might be ideal, many individuals are not yet ready or able to achieve that goal. Here are some key (READ MORE): https://lnkd.in/eBCJDPRK #addictionsupport #addictionrecovery #HarmReductionIsLove #harmreductionishealthcare #addictiontreatment #alcoholrecovery

We use harm reduction all of the time. Why use harm reduction for people who use drugs? Decades of research show that harm reduction strategies can: ✔️ prevent deaths from overdoses ✔️ prevent transmission of infectious diseases ✔️ reduce emergency department visits ✔️ reduce costly healthcare services ✔️ offer people who use drugs opportunities to connect to substance use treatment and other healthcare services in settings relatively free of stigma. The recent article "Has Fentanyl Peaked?" by German Lopez (NYTimes, May 21, 2024) discusses the fluctuations in fentanyl-related overdose rates, suggesting a potential peak. However, without sustained, innovative interventions, many will continue to suffer and die. Importantly, fatal overdose data doesn't tell the full picture and we must also address preventing non-fatal overdoses. Harm reduction is a practical approach that saves lives by addressing individuals' needs in their substance use journey. At #ZeroOverdose our basic strategy integrates community engagement, education, training, in addition to widespread naloxone distribution. Crucially, it includes personalized overdose safety plans, empowering individuals and their support networks with the knowledge and resources to prevent overdoses effectively. The dialogue initiated by the article is vital but must lead to broader acceptance and implementation of harm reduction. Policymakers, healthcare providers, and community leaders should look to organizations like ZeroOverdose as models for community-centered, proactive health interventions capable of combating this epidemic. We must not passively wait to see if fentanyl has peaked. Instead, we must act decisively with strategies proven to make an immediate and lasting difference to reduce both fatal and nonfatal overdose events. https://lnkd.in/eaZ38r3S #zerooverdose #harmreduction

Despite acceptance among healthcare professionals that chronic drug and alcohol misuse is a treatable disease, our data suggest that the desire for social distance remains high. These findings also demonstrate a significant improvement relative to previous research, which found that “less than 30 percent of primary care physicians were willing to have a person taking medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) as a neighbor or marry into their family.” These insights highlight the complex nature of stigma directed toward PWUD/IR, and how that stigma works to create barriers, fracture the relationship between healthcare practitioner and patient, and disconnect this patient population from our systems of care and the human connection that makes their self-defined healthcare goals and/or recovery possible.
