Farmed cod on path to 70,000t but no replacement to wild catch shortfall Although interest in farmed cod is blossoming as Barents Sea wild-catch quotas will hit their lowest point of the 21st century, it is still early days in a sector chasing profitability, stressed Norcod CEO Christian Riber in a recent interview with Undercurrent News at last month's Groundfish Forum. "We don't want to be a substitute; we're a product on our own," he said. "Of course, if some retailers and others choose to use it as a substitute, that's their choice, but we're after a different price point -- we're an aquaculture product that's more comparable to salmon." Andfjord criticizes ‘one size fits all’ proposal for land-based farms in Q3 update Norwegian land-based farmer Andfjord Salmon has taken issue with new regulations for the young sector proposed by the country's ministry of trade, industry and fisheries alongside its third quarter report. The company has responded to the government proposal -- which it described as a "one size fits all" policy -- to say that such an approach would have detrimental impacts on fish health, energy consumption levels and the competitiveness of Norwegian companies. Pine Island Redfish, a land-based recirculating aquaculture (RAS) operation in Florida, is gearing up for a major milestone: its first commercial harvest of red drum in a few weeks at its temporary facility at Mote Aquaculture Park in Sarasota. For CEO Megan Sorby, this is an exciting step forward for sustainable aquaculture in the region: "We are thrilled to bring our fish to market as the first production from Pine Island Redfish — the first RAS-raised red drum produced right here in Southwest Florida."
