Just weeks ago, the Estate of Henrietta Lacks filed a new lawsuit in federal court (Lacks v. Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation et al., No. 1:24-cv-02267 (D. Md. filed Aug. 5, 2024)) bringing a single cause of action for unjust enrichment alleging that the knowing use of Mrs. Lacks' non-consented cells from 1951 has led to continuing profits from which Mrs. Lacks and her estate have not been compensated. Though it has been 70+ years in this instance, the ethical and justice issues associated with non-consented use of biospecimens remain unsettled and of tremendous contemporary importance. MDPI Singapore had the distinct honor of meeting with Dr. Gavin Stewart Dawe, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Dr. Dawe, who joined the Editorial Board of Pharmaceuticals MDPI in May 2024, provided invaluable insights during our discussion. Have you ever thought about applying to become an American Statistical Association - ASA fellow? Not sure if you have what it takes? I’m certainly in that boat. I’ve got a pretty good record of service, good expertise in drug development and regulations, and 10+ years experience. My publication record…well let’s just say it could be better. So am I enough? Luckily, I don’t need to wonder too much. The ASA Biopharmaceutical Section offers a fellowship service that can give feedback on your credentials that I plan to sign up for this year. Rather than just wondering, I can get honest feedback and see both strengths and weaknesses of my application.
