Why do we care about the food system? How do we connect science, policy, and citizens? Refreshing to hear Tom Arnold @FoodSystems, currently Chair of an EU Commission looking to build an International Platform for Food Systems Science (IPFSS), when he talks about what is ‘new’ in food systems research today. Fifty years ago, there was fear of widespread hunger, the problem was producing enough food for the population. Today, the challenge is about producing enough nutritious food in a way that respects environmental limits & planetary boundaries. #foodsystems #foodsecurity #sustainableagriculture ICABR 2022 Annual Conference Panel: The Future of Food Systems Research and Policy Interfaces Tom Arnold @ UN Food Systems Coordination Hub Romina Cavatassi David Zilberman Regina Birner

Tackling the Hidden Costs of our Food Systems Food systems provide important benefits to the global population, not only providing food but also supporting livelihoods for more than one billion people around the globe. However, food systems also encompass hidden environmental, health, and social costs, estimated to be at least $10 trillion per year, as mapped out in two separate seminal reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Food System Economics Commission (FSEC). Please join us for a discussion on these hidden costs of food systems and the remedies to reduce this economic burden, while moving toward more sustainable, health-promoting, and socially inclusive food systems.

But what were the barriers to adoption and which resources are needed to close the digital divide for direct market farmers? This new JAFSCD article delves into California's direct market farmers' experiences from March through December 2020. #SupplyChains have been a primary topic of discussion over the last few years, in food, feed, agricultural supplies, and many other goods. As we move into the period of the new mandate, fair and well-functioning supply chains are core to the European Commission and are identified as a priority of the main political parties. ⬇ With that in mind, it was a productive opening of the new EU Agri-Food Chain Observatory today, organised by DG AGRI with an opening speech from Janusz Wojciechowski. The Observatory seeks to exchange information, expertise, and increase transparency across the entire food system, involving all actors from farmers to retailers. COCERAL looks forward to actively participate in this dialogue!

📣 Food system transformation must be a core priority for the next European Commission. 💡 In light of recent farmer protests in Brussels, and to encourage future policymakers to keep up the momentum towards a shift to more sustainable food systems in the EU, organisations from the EU Food Policy Coalition signed an open letter to Ursula von der Leyen, highlighting that: 🥕 The next European Commission should make the transition to #SustainableFoodSystems a high political priority; 👨🌾 The current Commission’s reaction to farmers' protests - opting to roll back sustainability policies instead of adopting necessary long-term measures - fails to respond to farmers’ demands for fair prices and a viable future; 🍃 The upcoming Strategic Dialogue can be used to build a consensus on creating more #SustainableFoodSystems through policy, using science as its starting point. 👉 Read the open letter: bit.ly/49Pcim6
