It's a cruel coincidence that National Library Week is happening during the solar eclipse when many library workers are dealing with members of the public who are angry that the library doesn't have enough #eclipse glasses for everyone who wants them. Libraries do not have unlimited budgets, so if your local library was able to get any glasses, that's a wonderful thing. However, if they weren't able to afford or obtain enough, that's not something to get upset over. Also, if you see a public librarian or library worker today, be extra nice--they are doing their best. Librarians and LIS workers of all stripes: I know you're doing your best with what you have. Here's $20 off the Level Up Your Leaping Librarian Resume course (code NLW). Check the comments for the link to the course page. This offer is valid only through 4/13. What kinds of career paths can students pursue when they study urban foods? Here's what Eleni Pliakoni, Ph.D., has to say: "Students can pursue a variety of diverse career options when they choose to study urban foods. Many of the students go into extension or may work at farming-related nonprofit organizations. Students can even use their new skills to run their own farm or nonprofit. Of course, they also can continue for a Ph.D. and go the academic route. Our program has a 99% job placement for graduates, which is incredibly important since it means we’re setting students up for success. Many cities are now looking for people who have an understanding of urban food systems, especially to identify food deserts." Read more — https://hubs.la/Q02MhkRT0 #urbanfoods #KStateOlathe

Stop treating your Biosketch like a CV. It’s much more than just a list of achievements and accolades. Your Biosketch is more than just a list of achievements. Your Biosketch is the main document that reviewers use to assess your qualifications and the strength of your team—which means you need to use it strategically. Each team member’s Biosketch should be tailored to the grant, providing a cohesive picture of why your team is uniquely qualified to do the research you’re proposing. A set of well-crafted Biosketches can make all the difference not just to your Investigators score, but to your overall argument for the feasibility of your project. It is one thing for a state to successfully graduate students from college, it is a another thing to keep them in the state. #college #universities #highered #graduates #employment #jobs #kansas #retention #braindrain "Although many Kansas graduates move to the Kansas City area, Kansas is not keeping enough workers to meet demand over the next decade. In fact, Kansas will be 34,000 educated workers short of meeting expected demand, according to a September 2023 report published by the Kansas Board of Regents. Donna Ginther, author of the report, is an economics professor at the University of Kansas and the director of the Institute for Policy & Social Research. Ginther said in an interview that Kansas is graduating enough workers to meet demand, but comparatively low wage prospects from companies based in Kansas are forcing out workers in high-wage and high-education industries. “We send a lot of our undergraduates to Denver, Dallas, Chicago,” Ginther said. “You know, most stay in the state, and so you’ll see a high concentration on either side of the state line in the Kansas City metro, and I count that as a win.” Ginther’s report analyzed data from six different states, including Texas, Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska in addition to Kansas. For almost every major industry area, including engineering, computer science and math, humanities and arts, and social sciences, Kansas pays either the lowest or second-lowest salary on average. The only exception is the education industry, where Kansas falls into the middle of the pack. " https://lnkd.in/etFgCwt3

Warning: A very interesting chart below. The accompanying chart illustrates the employment share of college graduates from top-10 schools, out of all management and professional occupations' workers with a bachelor's degree in 2021-2023, for selected metro areas. In San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Trenton-Princeton, Durham-Chapel Hill, San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, and New Haven-Milford, more than one in 20 are from a top-10 school. In Cleveland and Dallas, it is about one in 200. In Flint, Michigan it is one of 2,000. This distribution not only reflects the concentration of educational prestige but also points to broader economic and cultural implications. The source is The Burning Glass Institute career history dataset. Thanks Ami Listokin. Would love to hear your thoughts and insights on this! #labormarkets #economy #techhubs #geography #highered #recruitment

❌ "Paise nahi hain iss field mein," says Parent 😶 A Must-Read, My Heartfelt #CareerCounseling Conversation Just the other day, I had a conversation that perfectly encapsulates the age-old concern of many parents: "Paise nahi hain iss field mein.(There's just not enough money in this field to earn.)" It was a sentiment expressed by Priya's parents during a career counseling session. Priya, a diligent student, had recently appeared for the #NEET exam but felt she didn't perform as well as she had hoped. Despite this setback, her love for biology was unmistakable. In our recent encounter, I suggested to Priya that she explore alternative career paths, ones that align with her passion for biology. I recommended she consider appearing for the DU-CET and explore fields like Zoology or Marine Biology. These areas not only allow her to delve deeper into her interests but also offer promising career prospects. However, Priya's parents voiced their concerns about the #financialStability of such fields. It's a common worry, and I completely understand where they're coming from. So, I took a moment to share some insights with them. I highlighted the diverse #opportunities available in fields like marine biology and zoology. From research institutions to NGOs and even international organizations, there's a demand for skilled professionals in these areas. And with demand comes competitive salaries and growth prospects. I emphasized that success isn't just about the paycheck—it's about finding fulfillment in what you do. Priya's parents began to see the bigger picture, realizing that supporting her passion could lead to a fulfilling and prosperous career. 👉🏻 This encounter was a recent reminder of the importance of guiding students toward paths that resonate with their interests and talents. Sometimes, the road less traveled may not seem lucrative at first glance, but it often leads to the most rewarding destinations. So, to all the teachers and principals out there, let's continue to encourage our students to pursue their #passions, even if it means venturing into unconventional territory. After all, it's those #unconventional paths that often lead to extraordinary success. #CareerCounseling #FollowYourPassion #BiologyLovers #FutureScientists #EducationMatters #support #students #teachers #careergoals #biology #schools #principle #principal #BioVista

I am really looking forward to giving a talk today, 1/9/24, to postbacs, predocs, Ph.D. students and postdocs at Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health on “How to Evaluate, Build, and Highlight Transferable and Career Relevant Skills”. I enjoy being able to provide insights to help researchers know how many skills they have and can develop during their research and how to highlight these effectively on resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, and during interviews so that they are easily evident to others
