Shingobee Connection Trail – Phase 6 funding secured The first five phases of the Shingobee Connection Trail, a multiyear project, was completed in 2014 linking the State Paul Bunyan and Heartland Trail Systems. The name “Shingobee” was chosen because of its Ojibwe translation meaning pine, cedars, spruce and typifies the high-quality natural region the trail traverses. The idea for the Shingobee Connection Trail emerged during June 2005. Over the next few years dozens of people stepped forward and collectively donated thousands of hours of time and labor. Phase 6: The trail crossing at the south edge of Walker is the only highway crossing of the 7-mile completed trail in which pedestrians and bicyclists must cross the busy Highway 200/371. Steve Bilben, (Shingobee Trails Taskforce) along with the Walker’s “Bicycle Friendly Committee” under the Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce have once again been pushing forward for the final phase of the Shingobee Connection Trail. Funding sources for Phase 6 have been secured with the 2024 DNR Regional Trail Grant Program of $300,000 along with MnDOT’s Local Partner’s Program (LPP). The $300,000 DNR grant was critical to enable this project to proceed. The underpass construction will likely be done soon after July 2025, and when completed, will eliminate the crossing at the high speed, high volume (9,000 vehicles per day) traffic hazard presently encountered by bicyclists & Pedestrians users. When constructed, it will be a 12 x 10 box culvert approximately 100 ft. long. With the completion of this under pass (phase 6) it will serve to allow safe access for all pedestrians and bicyclists, plus trishaw Cycle without Ageing Program and The Silver Awarded City of Walker for being bike friendly will move one step closer to being Gold.

Last week, the Utah Department of Transportation, the Utah Transit Authority, the Wasatch Front Regional Council Mountainland Association of Governments, the Dixie Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Cache Metropolitan Planning Organization released Utah’s Unified Transportation Plan (Unified Plan). The first-of-its-kind nationally, the Unified Plan identifies the balanced investments in road, transit, and bike infrastructure, operations, and maintenance needed to stay ahead of growth and take care of existing investments through 2050. Planning and implementing transportation improvements cannot happen in a vacuum. Utah’s transportation agencies have worked together using shared growth projections, time horizons, and financial assumptions to assemble complementary transportation plans that integrate seamlessly with the statewide Unified Plan. The Point of the Mountain State Land Authority has worked closely with Utah’s transportation agencies to ensure critical road, transit, biking, and walking projects for The Point are included in the plan: • River-to-Range Trail • Freeway Crossing • 600 West Extension • 200 West Extension • The Point Loop Road • Transit Service • Several regional trail connections Visit the Unified Plan interactive website to learn more about these and other projects for The Point: https://lnkd.in/g_KZku-B #UtahUnifiedPlan #ThePointUtah #UtahInnovationCommunity #PointofTheMountain #TransportationPlanning Jordan Daniel Teuscher V. 5 Steps for Smarter Parking As cities grow, the urban areas suffer with insufficient parking, and this parking problem geographically ripples out from there. Many cities are trying to reduce the number of vehicles in condensed areas with incentives such as public transportation and redesigning the layout of neighborhoods to reduce the need for driving. This approach is fantastic, but as the NPH (Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California) reported, it requires a major change in resident's behavior and is very expensive.

Government commits £38m to improve safety of 17 high-risk local roads. The Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom has announced a further £38.3 million investment into improving the safety of 17 of the most high risk roads in England. The additional funding is in addition to the £147.5 million already invested in improving 82 high-risk roads. DfT says the improvements will result in up to 30% reductions in fatal and serious injuries on some roads. The extra support, allocated through local councils will include: - designing new junctions and roundabouts - improving signage and road markings - new road surfacing and landscape management - improved pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes DfT says this round of funding is expected to save 385 lives over the next 20 years, as well as reduce congestion, improve journey times and lower emissions. Transport Secretary Mark Harper said, “Britain’s roads are some of the safest in the world, but we are always looking at ways to help keep drivers and all road users safe. According to the Road Safety Foundation UK (RSF), it is estimated that all tranches of the Safer Road Fund will save nearly 2,600 fatal and serious injuries over the next 20 years.”... 🚄What does the future hold for Stratford Train Station? A partnership of London Legacy Development Corporation, London Borough of Newham, Network Rail and Transport for London have just submitted a Strategic Outline Business case to the government calling for the redevelopment of one of the UK’s busiest and fastest-growing stations: Stratford Station. With the backing of the community and other key stakeholders, their goal is to address capacity and subsequent overcrowding issues, future-proof the station and better connect the surrounding areas for generations. Stratford Station has seen a lot of change and development over the last twenty-five years. But even with the extension of the Jubilee line, the addition of the DLR and the Elizabeth line, the number of passengers using the train station has soared exponentially to a number that the current configuration of the train station was never designed to handle. Find out more in our latest case study! 🔗 https://hubs.ly/Q022Gtxb0 #Stratford #casestudy #StratfordTrainStation #Transport #UrbanDevelopment #FutureTransport #CommunityEngagement #London #InfrastructureUpgrade #PublicTransport #StrategicPlanning #RailwayRedevelopment

The state limits the use of its funds which effectively prohibits most of the towns and cities in the state to leverage any funds to go after federal dollars for safer roads. Yet more that 15% of the deaths on our roads in NC are Vulnerable Road Users-Cyclists, wakers, wheelchair users, runners, etc. So we get penalized for having such a high percentage of VRU killings instead of being able to get federal funds to multiple our funding for sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, greenways, etc. It is like NC just shoots itself in the foot repeatedly. Meanwhile, it appears that every single county level government agency has yet to even do their mandated ADA inventories and transition plans, the state NCDOT has tens of thousands missing and failing mandated curb ramps, and a huge number of towns are also way out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act but having ignored the mandated inventories and transition plans or still ignore adding accessibility features (i.e. curb ramps and other aspects) to newly constructed sidewalks. These inventories and transition plans were mandated to be done by July of 1992 by the 1990 federal civil rights law. So instead of having funds to support the rights of people to access existing facilities or installing safety features, NC government agencies simply decided to ignore federal rules and seems to prefer deadly and dangerously designed roads that leave hundreds dead and tens of thousand citizens seriously injured every year. How does this make sense to anyone? A state government that has a rule like this for over a decade clearly cares little for disabled people, people who walk, run, roll, or ride, and the health and safety of people living in or even just visiting the state. Seems like they need to wash their hands for the same reason that Lady McBeth had to. Where is the outrage from elected officials? #MichaelLazzara, #TomMcInnis, #VickieSawyer Where is the enforcement of federal civil rights under the ADA in NC #RoyCooper, #JoshStein, #FHWA, #USDOJ, #USDOT, #NCDOT, #ADA

An email list I recommend joining! Movement is a local, Vancouver organization that advocates to cities councils on behalf of transit users, and they want to spread the word about their campaigns, and are looking for people that want to get more involved -- 1 million people ride transit at least once a week in Metro Vancouver. In the largest city, over half of trips are taken without a car. This makes us a leader in North America on climate change, transportation safety and equitable access. So why, then, is our bus network stretched to the limit, getting slower every year, and on the precipice of a huge budget hole? How can we accommodate 70,000 new residents per year while avoiding gridlock?Movement's theory of change is that urgent improvements to transit will be indisputable once transit riders are empowered with: -A vision for how their commute can get better this year, not in 20 years; -An understanding of how the system works, and how change happens.Today, when our urban leaders propose changes to the transportation system, they primarily hear complaints from a small group of people who know how to work the system and want to maintain the status quo. Even if that urban leader wants to improve transit, they can come to feel that their hands are tied because of the backlash from that small group. When riders have a shared vision and a shared voice, leaders will quickly become empowered to start prioritizing transit riders. -- http://transitmovement.ca/

How exactly is MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) going to build all these new stations when they have already had to cannibalize the budgets of other #transit projects, like the Campbellton Road and Clifton Corridor light rail proposals, to pay for the Eastside Atlanta BeltLine streetcar scheme? If the Beltline streetcar moves forward, there is no way that these infill stations are built in the City of Atlanta in our lifetimes. Just to be clear, the infill stations make sense to me. The $100-million-plus-per-mile streetcar no longer does, given the Beltline’s importance as a corridor for those who are #walking or riding #bikes and other #micromobility. https://lnkd.in/e5JTDDGS

Atlanta is taking a step towards reducing traffic congestion and cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions with a new program that subsidizes discounts on electric bicycles for city residents. The City Council has allocated $1 million to the program, which will allow Atlantans over 18 to receive up to $2,000 off an e-bike as an instant rebate. Three-quarters of the rebate funds are reserved for residents earning at or below 80% of the region's median household income. Income-qualified residents can receive up to $2,000 off a cargo e-bike and $1,500 off a standard e-bike. The program is expected to fund the purchase of 800 to 1,000 e-bikes by this spring. This initiative not only promotes eco-friendliness but also encourages healthy transportation habits. #Atlanta #ElectricBikes #GreenLiving #SustainableTransportation
