Louisiana Department of Education is prioritizing education focused on foundational phonics and math skills. The result? Louisiana students have achieved some of the most significant academic progress in the nation, according to new data from NAEP, The Nation's Report Card.

the school system needs to be restructured. If only a handful of students can read at grade level...then maybe k-6 has to be be full time reading, writing, phonics, grammar, comprehension and math. when you reach grade level reading, math etc....THEN you start to differentiate into different subjects and regents exams. Until kids can do the basics, they will never "test well" like pass state tests or regents. Teachers and staff are asked to do EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN IN A CLASSROOM, except TEACH their subject matter. Doesn't seem helpful to try to teach a kid PHYSICS and they can't read or do long division.

They really had nowhere else to go except up… why don’t you put this into perspective, what schools are 1-31 and what are they focusing on, and how did Louisiana get to 49th in the first place?

Actual NAEP results: 4th grade math - 35% proficiency, 4th grade reading - 31%. 8th grade math - 20%, 8th grade reading - 28%

I’ve been saying this for years! Phonics are important. Basic skills are essential.

This is wonderful news. Hopefully this growth and good work will continue after Himself deleted thé US Department of Education

Congratulation on the higher achievements. I would hope the state's citizens expect continued improvement in performance. That would entail improving economic, social, and political factors which have been past obstacles.
