You're a First time CPO! Now What? A few years back, I penned "Escaping the Build Trap," and since then, I've been on a mission to guide organizations in building robust product teams. The demand for CPOs is soaring, but many new leaders find themselves at a crossroads, wondering how to navigate the executive level. 🤔 Becoming a Chief Product Officer involves more than just products; it's about steering the entire business toward success. As stewards of the business, our mission is clear: crafting exceptional product strategies that drive customer outcomes. But here's the catch – landing the CPO role is one thing; retaining it is another challenge. At the Amplify Conference 2022, I had the pleasure of sharing my journey and shedding light on pitfalls for product leaders to avoid: 1️⃣ Speak the Language of Business Outcomes: While processes are crucial to a well run organization, don't lose sight of the bigger picture. Connect product decisions and solving customer problems back to revenue and costs. 2️⃣ Prioritize Product Strategy: Don't get lost in the execution details. Elevate your focus to crafting a compelling product strategy. 3️⃣ Early Hiring for Analytics and Operations Support: Delegate data gathering to focus on decision-making. Build a team that supports your strategic goals. 4️⃣ Establish Trusting Partnerships Across the C-Suite: Especially with the Chief Revenue Officer (CRO). Collaboration is key for aligning product and revenue goals. 5️⃣ Fit Matters: Understand the differences between startup and enterprise CPO roles. Find the right fit based on your skills and aspirations. 6️⃣ Know When to Pivot: Recognize when it's time to move on, rather than forcing an ill-fitting situation. Your success is tied to the right environment. In my CPO Accelerator program, I've witnessed the transformation of product leaders by honing strategic mindsets and executive skills. It's incredibly rewarding to prepare the next generation of elite product executives. 🌟 Let's shape the future of product leadership together!
