Working in the Mid Cities area of DFW has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. The area is vast, and in the past, we’ve faced challenges with execution and follow-through for the accounts we service for various reasons. But challenges are just opportunities in disguise, right? I’m currently on a mission to rebuild and strengthen relationships with our valued steadfast accounts while also forging new business connections. This process demands patience, strategy, and a deep understanding of the unique needs of each account. One of the most effective tools in my arsenal has been supplier ride-alongs. By bringing our suppliers directly into the fold, I can bridge gaps created by past missteps and showcase our unwavering commitment to excellence and reliability. These ride-alongs not only build trust but also demonstrate the exceptional value and quality of the wines we represent. Transparent communication is at the heart of this rebuilding process. By ensuring our accounts have clear visibility into inventory numbers and forecasting, I help them understand their inventory status and anticipate potential issues. For instance, with 450 units of a particular SKU in stock and multiple accounts buying varying amounts steadily, proactive planning is crucial for optimal placement adjustments. I am excited to continue this journey, transforming the Mid Cities into a thriving hub for the fine wines we represent and fostering relationships built on trust and mutual respect. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to learn so much about the industry in the last 1.5 years - taking advantage of all of the opps presented to me. I’ve learned how the industry operates (CA is way different from TX!); how internal teams work to build the business and keep our suppliers happy; what it’s like working with the buyers at stores; how hard the work is of our field employees & portfolio managers; & gained way more knowledge than I could have ever imagined! I’ll tell you this, there’s more behind those wine & spirits displays than you know! I have so much more respect for our field employees because they work hard to make big things happen! I recently attended the National Restaurant Association show in Chicago to stay appraised of the industry and network with growing businesses. As I respectfully approach booths, I try not to scare people off with my badge, thinking I am there to poach candidates (which is not the case). So with my badge tucked into my jacket, I approach with a smile and a handshake and ask what their role is within a company. I often hear, "I am just a salesperson." .... This phrase doesn't do justice to the pivotal role sales professionals play in driving business success! I wished they would have been excited and let their passion for their products shine through. Many did not look up from their phones, or stop eating long enough to find out who I was. Some even said they wished it was the last show they'd be asked to do. Sales teams are the frontline ambassadors of a company's brand, and their efforts are crucial in achieving growth and building strong client relationships. These interactions surprised me! A nice way to start my day yesterday: breakfast panel hosted by Fortnum & Mason in their iconic building, organised by Findr. The panel had great insights on “how to create partnerships with luxury brands”. My takeaways: 1- No matter the industry you are in or the level at which you’re building a partnership: trust is of the essence. 2- You must build and nurture a new relationship based on mutual knowledge and alignment of goals between parties. 3- Partnership is about building blocks; it’s about collaboration based on mutual respect. Spend time building the relationship but make sure you have a clear plan about what you want to achieve with that engagement. 4- Look for degrees of connection with the brands you really want to work with. 5- Agree on clear parameters of success. 6- Above all: patience!! And keep in mind your brand’s DNA. What a nice surprise to meet Derren Powell there! Great seeing you! Are you discovering or qualifying? You should be doing both! In the hospitality industry, it is often just referred to as the qualification process. 🚩 And most sellers do just that… 👉 But, consider the difference: Qualify - to be entitled to a particular benefit or privilege by fulfilling a necessary condition. Discovery - the act of process of seeing, finding or gaining knowledge of something previously unknown. This is what many traditional sales training and methodologies get wrong. Sure, leads should be qualified or you'd be wasting your time chasing customers that aren't a good fit/match for your solution. But, ⚠️ We're often more focused on whether it’s a good business decision for the hotel. Both are important! ...and necessary! Discovery is meant to be about the buyer's primary needs. Qualifying is about the businesses needs and the customer's ability to buy.
