The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has a goal of 7% of apprentices in registered apprenticeship programs being qualified people with disabilities. However, in 2022, only 2.6% of apprenticeship sponsors met this goal. People with a disability have a 38% labor force participation rate, compared to 78% for people without a disability. Although the number of apprentices who identified as having a disability increased by about 550% between 2017 and 2019, we can do better. Apprenticeships can be a successful way to recruit, train, and retain people with disabilities in the workforce. People with disabilities who participate in apprenticeship programs and receive support are more likely to succeed.
