When choosing a college consultant for a child with a disability, be sure to interview those you are considering to be sure they have the relevant experience. The consultant should be well-versed in special education rights and laws such as IDEA and ADA and how those laws change when a student moves from high school to college. Consultants should have training and experience in understanding neuropsychological evaluations and educational testing and in working with students with specific disabilities. https://lnkd.in/eG7udZij To continue educating yourself on what to look for, read Elizabeth C. The disconnect between the disability services offices and graduate programs/faculty on college and university campuses is structured by the institution. The basis of this structure is: institutions mainly focus on graduate school as an intellectual experience had by a brain and not an embodied experience had by a human being. Following this thinking: if grades are good, then everything is good. ...no need for systematic coordination between disability services and academic programs. #disabilityservices #graduatestudent

"Labor adds another complex layer to mental disability and higher education. With the rise of the market-driven university came the rise of contingent labor—contract faculty who are paid little and have little job security. This shift began decades ago but has now reached the point where nearly 75 percent of all undergraduate courses are taught by contingent faculty." "In higher education circles, contingent faculty are referred to by a variety of terms: non-tenure-track faculty, adjuncts, precarious faculty, contract faculty, and more." "I’ve spent my entire career as a contingent faculty member, off the tenure track, on tenuous renewable contracts, with a job that was always insecure. Contingent labor frequently intersects with mental disability to make the employment status of mentally disabled academics even more insecure." Have you worked as contingent faculty in higher education? Did the job affect your mental health? Are you neurodivergent working in a contingent position--and If so, do you find particular aspects of the job difficult? If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, you are not alone. Contingent labor both causes and exacerbates mental health struggles in higher education. Learn more about the intersection of job insecurity and mental health in my latest book, A LIGHT IN THE TOWER, from University Press of Kansas available to purchase from katiepryal.com. #neurodivergence #neurodiversity #mentalhealthawareness #HigherEd #mentalhealth #autism #disability #mentaldisability
