A Half-Million-Dollar Lesson from MLK... Martin Luther King Jr. wasn’t about chasing wealth—far from it. Despite being one of the most influential figures in history, MLK lived humbly and often sacrificed his own financial security for the movement. At the height of his career, King earned a modest salary as a pastor and leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). But instead of holding onto his earnings, he gave much of it back to fund the fight for civil rights. Here’s a crazy example: When King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, along with a $54,000 cash award (which is like $500,000 today), he didn’t keep a single penny. He donated the entire amount to support the cause. Think about that for a second. A half-million-dollar check—and he gave it all away. What’s the takeaway? MLK showed us that money is just a tool. It’s not about how much you have but how you use it. Aligning your finances with your values—whether that’s giving back, investing in your community, or supporting something bigger than yourself—is where the real wealth is. King proved that financial decisions aren’t just personal. They’re a reflection of your purpose.

This is exactly what “virtue signalling” looks like. The era of genuine leadership is about what people who work for you actually say about you. We can’t give some random theoretical concepts.
