The changing disclosure policies come at a time when scientists say the nation’s coastlines will experience as much sea level rise in the coming few decades as they have over the past century. They also have documented how the warming atmosphere is creating more powerful storms and more torrential and damaging rainfalls, which already are inundating communities where aging infrastructure was built for a different era and a different climate.

It is beginning to dawn on people that before you buy a property you would be wise to you find out what climate change is going to do to that property. Here is some possibly useful information that may help.

Our 2024 Natural Catastrophe sigma was published today. In what was the hottest year on record, #NatCats exceeded $100bn in insured losses for the fourth consecutive year with severe convective storms making a major contribution to those losses. We expect annual insured losses to continue growing by 5-7% - much in line with increases over the last 3 decades. So far, the impact of our changing climate has been small, but we expect its contribution to grow. This is both a nuanced and significant change in some states, including in the South & Southeast, requiring disclosures by certain real property owners of past flooding events/claims in connection with real estate transactions -- in responding to climate trends & flooding events. This is something to watch on the climate side, with important implications for property transactions.
