Hello nerds, do you remember when Designers were also often Developers? Remember that fun phase where we had Front-end Designers and they could code and appreciated HTML and CSS and the industry appreciated them back? Well I do [insert "sure grandma" meme]. Anyways, my team (we call ourselves the Pink Gremlins) at honeycomb.io is hiring a Product Designer and while I'm not the hiring manager, I do think the role would benefit from a familiarity with front-end development. If that's your skillset or fits someone you know, send them my way! The role isn't public yet, but I can refer people immediately! The gaming industry is going through a lot right now. Despite many layoffs and openings, the hiring landscape this month seems quite chaotic. There are plenty of senior developers, but often they lack the right skill sets. Meanwhile, numerous junior and mid-level developers possess some relevant skills, but the job descriptions demand senior-level expertise. There are also positions labeled for interns or beginners that unrealistically expect 1-2 years of professional experience in specific languages like C++, Python, or JavaScript. Overall, the hiring requirements from companies are quite a mess. I've been searching for a position in the gaming industry for the past three months with no luck. As a mid-level developer skilled in C++ and particularly strong in Unreal Engine Blueprints, I find it challenging to secure a role focused on Unreal Engine with C++. There are definitely areas I can improve, but without feedback, it's tough to know where to start. I submitted roughly 30 resumes in the last 2 weeks in my new job search. I got 2 screener calls, both from funded AI companies, one of the calls was from someone who sourced me directly (I need to ask how they did that), and the other from an application. I'm 1 for 30, or 2 for 30 if you count both calls. Both calls went REALLY well. I have that whole "first designer at a startup" dialog worked out, along with concepts around blending a company's marketing (look and feel) with actual product functionality, and getting more in depth when it comes to frontend work – played really nicely with founders. Both callers were saying I was answering questions before they were asked. Always a good sign (don't worry, I made sure to listen as much as I spoke and ask really thoughtful questions). I'm starting to feel the market warming up again to hiring experienced designers. Let's hope this pattern continues.

There are roles that do not need physical presence to deliver their KPI anymore. Examples: Graphics Designer (Including UI/UX Designers) Software Developer (Everything Software Engineering, don't need to be physically present) Product Manager (Can't we have meetings on Meet/Zoom/Zoho?) 🤷🏾 . Data Analyst/Scientist (what is their presence needed for 🤔) Add yours... ______________________________________________________ Any jobs that do not require lifting of anything physically, do not need physical presence. Even if they're interns, would they be hand held to understand how they'd work 🤔? There might be weekly/monthly meet ups to build physical strength, but coming to the office everyday to perform at these roles is: Wasting Employees time Wasting Company resources (Yeah, you'll pay rent and maintenance of office settings) Reducing productivity.
