With the link below, I’m sharing a few insights on the following: What role do higher education institutions play in creating civic minded citizens? How are colleges and universities still impacted by the pandemic? How are building longevity and sustainability impacted by certain procurement strategies? What are some of the systemic challenges currently facing community colleges?
Welcome to HMC Architects’ Five in Focus blog series, where we delve into the latest trends, ideas, and innovations shaping the future of architecture and design. This series is a conversation with our design professionals, inviting them to share what’s capturing their attention and offer unique insights. Eric Skiba, AIA, LEED AP, Assoc. DBIA is a higher education principal at HMC. Read on as he shares his insights on the civic role in higher education, the pandemic’s impact on enrollment, longevity and sustainability in community colleges, systemic challenges in the community college system, and the importance of activities outside our professions. https://lnkd.in/gGrQ-Nht #hmcarchitects #designforgood

Life in reflection. My Journey to becoming Senior Civil Designer.
I’m a proud First Nations woman from T’it’q’et in the St’at’imc Territory, living and working on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. As a member of the first generation in my family not forced into residential schools, I carry that legacy with pride and a commitment to breaking barriers. I attended public school with non-Indigenous classmates, where a short AutoCAD course sparked my passion for architecture and engineering—fields where I never saw people like me. At 15, I joined a pre-university summer program at The University of British Columbia, designed for the top 30 Indigenous students. That six-week experience gave me the confidence to pursue higher education. I sought a path where I could feel empowered and intellectually fulfilled, leading me to leave my community in Lillooet, B.C., for further studies. While life changed course shortly after high school when I became a mother, I adapted my goals and pursued a bachelor’s degree in engineering design and drafting. Since joining BBA nearly two years ago, I’ve had the privilege of working on projects that support Indigenous communities, especially in the clean energy sector. I’m particularly proud of BBA’s partnership with Indspire, which supports and invests in Indigenous students in their educational journeys. This partnership is an important step toward increasing Indigenous representation in STEM fields, a personal passion of mine. BBA’s contribution to truth and reconciliation in Canada is evident. The firm’s commitment to building authentic relationships with Indigenous peoples and ensuring our involvement in projects on our lands is something I deeply value. When I first joined BBA, I was struck by the practice of beginning meetings with land acknowledgements. This act of respect resonates with me. As we approach National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, it’s a time to reflect on Indigenous history, the significance of this day and how we can support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 calls to action. 2025 Ambassador Awards #VAF2025 The Vernacular Architecture Forum seeks applications for the 2025 Ambassadors Awards. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2024. The VAF Ambassadors Awards provide funding for student groups (undergraduate and graduate) from North American institutions, with a faculty sponsor, to attend VAF's annual conference. We hope through this program to enhance the VAF's recruitment of students, to diversify the membership and interest in the work of the VAF, to provide support to programs that teach vernacular architecture, and to increase the VAF's visibility on campuses. A selection committee will choose winning recipients based on the strength of the proposals, considering especially the goals of the award program outlined above. The amount of money awarded to each program is at the discretion of the selection committee, but shall depend on such factors as the distance needed to travel to the annual conference site, the number of students involved, the number of Award applicants, and the funds available to the Award program. The total Award amount per institution is limited to $3,750.00 with a maximum of $750.00 per student. Each student will also receive a one-year complimentary membership to VAF. We encourage, but do not require, that Ambassadors apply for matching funds from their institutions. Institutions may not receive Ambassadors Awards in consecutive years. Fifty-nine years experience as a landscape architect, urban and recreation planner, design educator.
Am embracing the authentic listening skills and empowering engagement that Beth deploys in all her work! Having been a landscape architect teaching architects mostly at the BAC from 1972-2012,I can identify w/ being the Duck sans water! My natural science Id wants to tout diversity; in the natural world it is the hedge against extinction, through robust diversity of gene pools. In the climate change design world we have to see our roles anchored , in the context of difficult ,multivariate conditions. People work, education, organizational leadership, playing the long game for replacing all coastal infrastructure to adapt to sea level rise… big stuff to plan, design, fund and execute prudently.
Dean and Faculty of Practice @ the Boston Architectural College | Go-getter, Do-er, Disruptor, Courage-builder, Architectural Advocate, Architect, Friend | Later is now
Running for the 2026-27 President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture is nothing short of an honor—a chance to celebrate the voices of each one of you and the students whose dreams we champion. 🪺 In 2012, I shifted from a decade at Rafael Viñoly Architects to embracing the world of higher education, navigating missteps, celebrating triumphs, and cultivating a steadfast commitment to what I now understand as transformational leadership. 🐦 At times, I've felt like the odd duck in the academic pond: my institution has no tenure system, a reliance on part-time adjuncts, and a heavy administrative load for most full-time faculty, myself included. If you've ever felt awkwardly perched on the fringes of the mainstream, I see and hear you; it's a weight that both bears down on us and propels us forward. ▶️ Enter ACSA—my involvement has been driven by a passion to amplify the voices of students and faculty whose experiences are as diverse as the institutions we serve. ▶️ ACSA represents over 7,000 architecture faculty, guiding the education of more than 40,000 students from a spectrum of institutions—large and small, public and private, urban and rural, spanning 2-year community colleges to 4-year pre-professional, and accredited professional programs. ▶️ Every faculty member, be they full-time, part-time, or adjunct, plays a pivotal role, spearheading critical pedagogies in a world saturated with uncertainty. Breaking through the noise together is the good work of a lifetime! — Thank you for your consideration of me and the incredible people I serve through the Boston Architectural College American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Coalition of Community College Architecture Programs (CCCAP), and NOMA #advocacy #designeducation #architectureschool #transformativelearning #transformationalleadership #teachingandlearning #architecturestudents #futureofarchitecture #blg4acsa

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to reflect on the history of the residential school system. Today, we honour the resilience of survivors, remember the children who never came home, and reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation. In the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction field, the spaces we design, build, and manage directly impact the communities we serve. We hold a responsibility to ensure our practices are inclusive, respectful, and aligned with the principles of reconciliation. At WalterFedy, we are committed to active allyship—whether through continuous learning, integrating Indigenous knowledge into our projects, or supporting initiatives like our Indigenous Engineering Scholarship at the University of Guelph. This scholarship is just one step towards empowering the next generation of Indigenous leaders in architecture and engineering. Today, let’s reflect on how we can strengthen our allyship, challenge inequities, and hold ourselves accountable to building a future where all communities thrive. #NDTR #TruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #Allyship
