The time has come. I'm finally retiring from coaching youth sports. Here's an article on the subject, and what it's like to coach on an island, in one of our fantastic local papers, The Vineyard Gazette. #youthsports #essays

"STOP THE GAME...When are you going to stop dribbling and give it to someone who's actually good on the ball?" -My non-league coach to a 16 year old me. Sounds painful doesn't it! I can confirm it definitely was; I was instantly embarrassed, especially as I was training with the first team who were all 25-30 years old. 2 minutes later, the first team striker went through on goal and looked as if he was about to score. I hunted him down and slide tackled him from behind, perfectly timed, and came out with the ball, still angry and upset from the coaches comment. "STOP THE GAME...see that there, that's what you've got that no one else in this club or any club within 5 miles has, brilliant son, now stick to what you're good at" Suddenly, I was delighted with myself, and this one comment sparked an obsession for defending that became my bread and butter for the next 10 years. Every coach I have played under since has mentioned how they admire how much I love to defend. I always think back to my 16-18 year old days in a non-league environment and admire how much it taught me. I also question what type of player I would have been if I had that extra bit of talent which would have landed me in a youth academy set up instead. This type of coaching doesn't exist anymore, and rightly so. However, I think there's a lot to take from the intention behind it. In my opinion, players trying to be the player they want to be instead of the player that they are can hold them back massively. Most could benefit from trying to specialize within their strengths, whilst working on their weaknesses, rather than forcing an ideal player to come out of them that probably never will. For me, although it may be an unpopular opinion, I believe that in football, as in life, we are all blessed with certain gifts that when honed properly, can help the team to win. That is the beauty of team sports, and as coaches or mentors we should work our hardest to show individual players at any level their potential based on the gifts they have been given. I know this may be a slightly controversial topic! Looking forward to hear what you guys think? #Football #Teamsports #Professional

While there are so many benefits to kids' involvement in sports, experts recognize there should be limits to the time spent in practice as well as specialization. If you have questions, call us for a free consultation for your young athlete! 800-974-4378

The Multi Sport Athlete It’s becoming more rare…that young athletes play multiple sports…any strength coach worth their salt knows the importance of long-term athlete development and the difference between early specialization and late specialisation sports…with the advent of junior academies and school programs shuttling athletes into year round single sport performance programs, the athletes long term athletic development may be hindered. USP Young Gun Junior Elite Athlete Fletcher Dutton has represented his state in Water Polo, Surf Life Saving and A Gold Coast Suns Academy Rep. The mixture of sports is ideal for his athletic development to prevent burn out and over use injuries! He is a stunning example of what is possible for the multisport athlete when workload is managed appropriately! Well done Fletcher!! The analogy I use is that very few if any of the professional elite athletes I have coached played the 1 sport year round. AFL premiership player Dayne Beams played Cricket, Little Athletics, Sydney Swans AFL Superstar Kurt Tippett played Soccer, basketball and swam. St. Kilda Gun AFL Player Sam Gilbert played touch footy and rugby league. Courtney Hancock played basketball and Australian Basketball Rep Matty Hodgson played AFL as a junior. So why play multiple sports? 1. Prevent player burn out 2. Prevent over-use injuries and boredom. 3. By playing multiple sports you will develop other athletic qualities e.g. footballers playing basketball pick up clean hand skills, agility and vision from playing basketball. It’s one of the key reasons why our off-season training camps-have athletes play multiple sports. What an impactful interaction. As a leader, we have to create the Ripple effect. Having the back of a teammate is the most important role of a Coach, Leader, Team Manager

This wasn't a learning I expected to see From the Lithuanian Basketball League As you know, I'm all for caregiving loudly and leaving loudly, and there is so much power when fathers do that in the workplace. But when your manager decides to amplify that, in no uncertain terms You know the ripple effect that is going to have on the culture of a team Elite sport is not known for its forgiveness for anything that diverts from winning the league But head coach of Zalgiris Kaunas, Šarūnas Jasikevičius, makes it quite clear why his star centre isn't playing in this playoff game Permission that isn't asked for is so powerful And they ended up winning the game and the series Lima said to press, on his return, "It feels great that the coach has got your back. Now I need to return the favor with good play on the court," And if it works in elite sports, it sure as hell works in business too Be the manager who amplifies the ripple That is where true victory lies

This is how we dismantle the Patriarchy. As women we can fight for change, we can do all the things required to ensure that women get more opportunities, equal pay and more women can thrive in their personal and professional lives. But until we have more men on side who realise that the patriarchal system also doesn't work for them and that they too are losing out in so many ways through the strict expectations of what it means to be a man, we will never be able to create meaningful change. Men may have so many advantages in the workplace, but these toxic ideas that they cannot be successful whilst also caring for their family and being there for these important moments, disadvantage them in so many ways. We need more male role models like the coach of the Lithuanian basketball team who are willing to stand up and change the narrative for men. Who can normalize the fact that men are caregivers too and this is in fact often their most important role. Who encourage the men in their teams to take time for their family, to do the school run, to pick up their kids when they are sick, to finish early for sports day, ot to care for an elderly relative. Only when men see this as an option will things start to truly change. And men deserve change too! The patriarchy may serve men in many ways, but it does them a huge disservice in so many others. #Patrirachy #GenderEquality #WorkplaceRights #ParentalLeave

Even the most important player on your team still has a life and milestones they need to be able to enjoy to be their best self. If you can’t cover for these important events, you need to develop capability and trust in others on your team. Both of these actions show your commitment to the employee and will yield higher commitment from them.
