Building a High Impact Network 🌟
Research highlights the disparities women face across various professional scenarios. From contributing in discussions, negotiating, to networking they're often judged differently.
So, how can women effectively approach networking?
A recent study by Harvard Business Review published in the Academy of Management Journal revealed that introductions from respected colleagues to senior leaders significantly influence perceptions, signaling credibility essential for overcoming biases and accessing influential networks.
Here are four tips from this research:
*️⃣ Choose intermediate-status sponsors: They bridge the gap between managers and top-tier individuals.
*️⃣ Prioritise long-tenured female sponsors: They significantly enhance junior women's access to high-status networks.
*️⃣ Use the "female triplet" effect: Link junior women, female sponsors, and senior women for impactful support.
*️⃣ Combine local contact with global reach: Pair junior women with local sponsors while tapping into global networks for broader opportunities.
The complete article by Carla Rua-Gomez, Gianluca Carnabuci, and Martin C. Goossen talks in-depth about what companies can do to help women build network sponsor programs.

This is the power of showing up, collective action, and movement building.
Taunet Women Group members in Solai – Nakuru are among those participating in the Women's Empowerment Link (WEL) 's Transformative Leadership project - Women's Leadership in Governance and Political Processes in Kenya under UNDEF.
October last year, during a monitoring field visit I asked who among them attends public participation forums, chief barazas, or nyumba kumi meetings... only 3 hands went up.
They did not have much hope in such structures to include their inputs in development. Other barriers mentioned were, male dominance, societal perception of women who dare speak out, care work and gender roles, lacked knowledge and capacity, etcetera.
Armed with Feminist Principles on Development, I gladly shared my knowledge on movement building and collective action, they also shared practical examples and tips on time management.
Today, I asked the same question and the WHOLE room, 29 out of 30 hands went up. I almost cried. 😭
So I asked them to share what that has been like. And eeeiii! Almost cried some more.🤭
Three weeks ago, they mobilized themselves and went to their village participation forum of wazee wa mtaa (village elders) the discussion: Illicit brews and alcoholism - that has crippled the families and community's progress and development.
With a collective voice, they ensured the disappointment of leaders who had no merit in the role and appointed new ones, with a specific ask to include women in the special committee - 2 women were elected. 🥳 This specific meeting they reported had 80% women turn-up. They were not allowed to speak at first, but kept on raising their hands and 'making some noise'.
This is the power of showing up and movement building. 💪🏽
They promised to keep showing up and speak truth to power, even when their voices shake!
A massive shout out to Mrs Jane, the group's trained facilitator on leadership/secretary who was tasked with ensuring the women have the information and knowledge they need for ACTION.
Their success story is a testament to the effectiveness of the Women's Empowerment Link (WEL) 's Transformative Leadership project and the amazing team that carries out this vision as they aim for transformation.

🌍 Transformational Tuesday Reflection: Breaking Barriers & Empowering Women 🌎
Yesterday, I had the honor of attending a workshop focused on women’s inclusion in the labor force and leadership roles during the MENA YES! event. I felt proud hearing about the incredible initiatives happening across Africa and beyond, but one aspect really shook me: despite these efforts, local cultural barriers still hinder women’s progress.
For instance, in some regions, women in leadership are met with resistance. Their male counterparts may refuse to interact with them professionally, yet would have no issue if it were a man handling the same business. Women, therefore, find themselves needing to bring men into discussions to ensure deals are sealed. Even more concerning, in certain areas, women in leadership roles face the societal pressure of not being marriageable.
These stories made me realize the urgency of continuing this conversation. How can we start shifting these deeply embedded mindsets? How do we empower women to rise above these barriers, not just for their own success but for the generations to come?
The path forward requires collective action, education, and cultural transformation. It’s time we foster environments where women can lead, contribute, and grow without limitations. 💛
💬 How do you think we can challenge these mindsets and empower women to take more leadership roles around the world?
📢 Shout out to all the individuals, communities, and organizations striving for women’s inclusion in the workforce and leadership roles. And for their inspiring efforts, a special high five to :

Yes, women’s networks can make a difference.
This is one of the major learnings I took away from the session that was hosted by AWN EMEA titled "A Scientific Approach on Gender Gap", where we delved deep into the systemic issues and actionable solutions to bridge the gender gap in professional spaces. (Thanks Sina Marie Breitenbach and Farah Ali for co-hosting!)
🎙️ Dr. Kyra Göbel delivered a scientific talk, sharing valuable insights on:
- The Glass Ceiling Effect: The invisible barrier that prevents women from rising to top positions.
- Hiring & Promotion Bias: The unconscious biases that affect hiring and promotion decisions.
- Backlash Effects When Negotiating: The negative consequences women face when they negotiate assertively.
- The difference in performance evaluation and recognition between men and women.
📈 Ivan Bulaev added to the conversation with his experiences he’s gathered from various positions, talking about the advantages of diverse leadership panels, effective negotiating strategies and why we need to include men into the conversation.
Studies show that getting the word out reduces the gap and women’s networks such as AWN create a safe environment to overcome these obstacles.

Happy Vietnamese Women's Day - WOMEN LEADERS, CREATING HUMAN VALUES
Today, as we celebrate Vietnamese Women's Day, it's inspiring to see so many women stepping into leadership roles and making remarkable strides. As a woman in leadership, I’ve poured my heart into contributing to our organization’s success and sustainability, drawing on the unique strengths that women bring to the table.
I believe our success stems from a beautiful balance of two contrasting qualities: the "STRONG" to forge ahead as pioneer and the "SOFT" to adapt with a BIG HEART. Leading with compassion is at the core of what we do, guiding us toward not just achievements, but also a fulfilling and joyful journey. This guiding principle shapes my approach in both my work and personal life, especially in the vital areas of health care and education.
Here’s to all the women out there—may we continue to shine and embrace our compassionate hearts!

Women in low-income communities are not just holding families together.
Their struggles fuel their fight for positive change.

Happy International Women's Day!💜
As part of IQE's International Women's Day Event I had the opportunity to share some advice for young women starting out their careers. Here are four tips for future female leaders:
1️⃣ Acknowledge that there's no predetermined route to achieving success. Each of us has unique strengths and weaknesses, so embrace your individuality and find the best way to deploy your talents.
2️⃣ Stay true to your values even in the face of adversity - define your own true north and remain authentic.
3️⃣ Don’t let self-doubt hold you back and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. It’s a sign of strength, not weakness, and gives you the opportunity to build meaningful connections and networks that can support, educate and empower you.
4️⃣ Be confident in your abilities and your capacity to grow, and never hesitate to reach for your goals.
Thank you Steven Curwood, Victoria Boyce, Beki Green, Maria Marced, Victoria Hull, Tom Dale, Christine Dunbar!
