The National Association of Colleges and Employers says that students with internship are more likely to be male, white students who are not first generation, and students who are not recipients of Pell grants. Northern Essex Community College is working to disrupt this pattern, making internships available to all it community college students, including those in liberal arts. Anytime I talk to potential graduate students (shout out for Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur ,BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus ,Anurag University ) I am amazed by their question ranging from “what time should I send an email to faculty to get a response!” to questions about racism, cost of living. "Key findings: Internship roles advertised in California attract 16.80 applicants per day — that’s more competitive than any other state. New Hampshire offers more (49.96) internships per 100,000 of the population than any other state. New York is the most competitive city (10.28 applicants per role per day), while Atlanta has the most availability (150.86 roles per 100,000 people). Entertainment ranks as the most competitive industry for interns, with the average internship role attracting 33.33 daily applicants. Texas is placed as the next most competitive state for interns (11.02 applicants per role per day). Two factors no doubt contributing to this are the influx of new residents in recent years and the fact that the Lone Star state is considered one of the best states in the country in which to start a career." https://lnkd.in/gwHGYRx8

4. Community College Degrees Aren't As Valuable to an Employer College degrees are college degrees. The idea that a community college degree is less valuable to an employer is just wrong. Whether you have a bachelor's degree or an associates degree, the employer is looking for an indication that you will be the ideal fit at their organization. Students should prepare themselves by taking internships over the summer months in their industry and practicing interview skills with their career centers.

I appreciated this article by Lindsay Ellis in The Wall Street Journal yesterday. As a Career Coach, I see college students want to begin their career exploration process during their first-year or sophomore year. However, many are unsure of what is the right career route (or major). The result for employers is that they are seeing lower conversion and retention from their internship programs. Despite an increasing number of companies providing compensation to their interns, it is evident that the existing internship system is still flawed. Today, internships play a vital role in securing post-graduation employment. However, when the most desirable internships are primarily accessible to individuals with insider information or social connections allowing them to apply a year and a half in advance, it perpetuates a cycle of inequality. Career Professionals! How are we adapting to earlier and earlier internship deadlines? How are we supporting students with shortened career exploration timeframes (not to mention shortened timelines from PSEO credits)? How do we advocate for ALL of our students by filling in the social equity gap? If I gave a TED Talk, it would be around this subject. 😂 https://lnkd.in/dYuFm-JR
