The Future of Army Space and Missile Defense with Lieutenant General Sean A. Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have underscored the importance of space and missile defense capabilities, but questions remain regarding the Army’s role and preparedness in performing these missions. A recent exercise in the Pacific region provided the U.S. military and international partners one of the first chances to truly game out the Pentagon’s new warfare concept for connecting forces and capabilities on a grand scale. Valiant Shield, which occurred in mid-June, is a biennial exercise focused on integration between the services in a multi-domain environment in the Pacific region. This year’s exercise, the tenth such event, involved multinational partners for the first time. It allowed American forces and foreign militaries — including participation from U.S. Space Command and U.S. Transportation Command — to focus on real-world events while testing concepts such as Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2), which envisions how systems across the entire battlespace from all the services and key international partners could be more effectively and holistically networked to provide the right data to commanders, faster. https://lnkd.in/eTeX4HRT

The #USSpaceForce unveiled an overhaul of its command structure that consolidates two large organizations under a three-star general. The name of the new organization, U.S. Space Forces-Space, is a bit of a mouthful, intended to capture the unit’s strong focus on meeting the needs of #USSpaceCommand. Whereas the Space Force is a military service, #US Space Command is a Department of Defense unified combatant command responsible for planning and conducting military operations in the space domain. The command has representatives from all military branches, including the Space Force, the U.S. intelligence community, and several foreign allies. The growing threats we face demand significantly increased capability requirements from Allies. ❗The Alliance has more forces at higher readiness with new capabilities. ❗Allies are offering forces to NATO’s command at a scale not seen in decades. ❗Allies are taking on larger, more demanding exercises to test our abilities. ❗NATO has doubled the number of battle groups on the Eastern flank. Over the next five years, NATO Allies across Europe and Canada plan to acquire thousands of air defense and artillery systems, 850 modern aircraft, including 5th generation F-35s, and more high-end capabilities.
