It aims to quantify phosphorus flows across sectors and benchmark circular strategies, seeking to optimize mining methods with a focus on sustainability and efficiency.   Intern duties and responsibilities:  During the internship period, the intern would be required to perform the following tasks: -       Literature Review on Phosphate Mining Practices: conducting a thorough literature review to understand and document various practices of phosphate mining at both national and international levels. This involves examining the methods, technologies, and environmental considerations associated with phosphate mining. -       Quantification of Phosphorus Flows and Usage by Sector: This involves reviewing existing literature to create an inventory that quantifies the flows of phosphorus and its utilization across different sectors. I recently completed a one-month internship at Eastern Coalfields Limited, where I gained hands-on experience with simple discharge loaders and hydraulic pumps. This opportunity allowed me to delve into the intricacies of these essential pieces of machinery, enhancing my understanding of their operational mechanisms and maintenance requirements. Working directly with these systems provided me with practical knowledge that goes beyond theoretical concepts, giving me a clearer picture of their roles within the broader context of mining operations. This internship has significantly enhanced my technical skills and deepened my appreciation for the engineering behind mining equipment. The experience not only improved my practical abilities but also boosted my confidence in applying these skills in real-world scenarios. Farewell, Phalaborwa Copper Mining Company! My Grind has Come to an End... (For Now!) As the dust settles after my incredible internship at the Phalaborwa Copper Mining Company, I can't help but feel a surge of emotions: satisfaction, pride, gratitude, and maybe a hint of dust in my throat (it's a good dust!). These past few months haven't just been about textbooks and exams; they've been a baptism by fire in the heart of the grinding game. From wielding a welding torch in the workshop to troubleshooting giants like the Auto mills, I've traded theoretical equations for real-world problem-solving and sweat equity. Every day was a journey through the maze of conveyor belts, a symphony of grinding machinery, and a testament to the power of engineering marvels. But the true gems of this experience were the amazing people I met along the way – seasoned engineers who became mentors, fellow interns who became teammates, and everyone in between who taught me the ropes (including how to avoid those pesky sparks!). This internship wasn't just about "what" I learned – it was about "how" I learned. It was about applying that dusty textbook knowledge to solve real-world problems, from optimizing maintenance procedures to analyzing system failures like a detective on the case. ️ But beyond the technical, it was about forging resilience in the face of challenges, honing my problem-solving skills under pressure, and most importantly, learning the crucial importance of safety. I leave with a newfound respect for the power of a good safety protocol and the responsibility we hold as engineers to keep ourselves and others safe. This isn't goodbye, Phalaborwa. I had no interest in my program of Study until my third year. During my first three years studying Minerals Engineering, I often struggled to answer the question, "Why are you studying this?" I remember how I used to only read without understanding anything before examination. I was just interested in passing my exams because I did not understand anything about Mineral processing. I will always cry about not understanding anything in class. I used to always think I chose the wrong path. In my second year, I wanted to defer and read BSc Mathematics. I thought I would excel there because I love mathematics. I thought of it and something in me told me, “ Why don’t you finish reading BSc in Minerals Engineering then you further study MSc Mathematics”. This statement kept me going. This statement was my motivation until I had a hands-on experience at GOLD FIELDS Ghana, Tarkwa Mines and everything clicked. The practical exposure gave me a deep understanding of the industry, the challenges, and the immense potential for impact. Here am I today wanting to be a metallurgical engineer and an advocate. Sometimes I ask myself, “How did I not understand anything in minerals processing but now I speak mineral processing language?”😂 In my opinion, internships should be compulsory for every student. My internship lasted about six weeks but my story changed. They bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing students to truly grasp the relevance of their studies. My time at Goldfields was invaluable, and I believe every student should have that opportunity. Dear continuing students, if you get the opportunity to intern with any company, please be involved in anything they do. Try as much as possible to give out your best. Don’t just see yourself as an intern. Indicator minerals in the transported cover is a powerful exploration method, particularly where subtle geochemical changes can not be realized in assays. Here is a case study from NW Botswana of a number of 2-km spaced shallow drill holes that aimed to test the TOFR. Indicator minerals collected near the base of the cover are correlated with the cores of the same depths and this shows that goethite with relicts of chalcocite and cuprite increases in abundance in two drill holes, almandine-spessartine garnet with pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite inclusions increases in the same spot with no major mechanical dispersion. The next step is likely deeper drilling for targeting. The HM component of the project was part of the 3-months internship of Simon Crocetta, an Undergraduate student at UWA.
