Steve Peck, U.S.VETS CEO and Board president of the California Association of Veteran Service Agencies (CAVSA), continued the conversation this week about access to mental health and other services that help prevent veteran homelessness with Toby Ewing, executive director of the Mental Health Services Oversight & Accountability Commission. CAVSA facilitated the discussion focusing on community-based solutions with leaders of member agencies: Akilah Templeton, president and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego; Chris Johnson, president and CEO of Nation’s Finest; Amy Fairweather, Swords to Plowshares director of policy; and Robert Stohr, executive director of U.S.VETS Patriotic Hall. The talk comes as California prepares for changes envisioned under Prop. 1, including new service-enriched housing for individuals experiencing homelessness and expanded treatment for substance use and mental health disorders. #servingthosewhoserved

3moHey leaders: Akilah Templeton, president and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego; Chris Johnson, president and CEO of Nation’s Finest; Amy Fairweather, Swords to Plowshares director of policy; and Robert Stohr, executive director of U.S.VETS Patriotic Hall. Let's work together to create a Veteran-focused housing solution that uses a mix of VA HUD-VASH vouchers and county-based low-income vouchers (similar to project home-key/project-room key) to house veteran and their families. We could also offer some great private insurance-based, VA Care in the Community -based (VACCN), or Medi-Cal-based social services onsite, like community readjustment and reentry-focused psychotherapy. We could follow the path that organizations like US VETS have followed, or offer our own suite of partnered services via my non-profit, Women In Transition (DBA Best Intentions Peer Sevices) or my LLC, Yoshida, Yamada & Washingon Services! www.yywservices.org www.BestIntentionsPeerServices.org
