George, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Sixfold Bioscience, was faced with the challenge of hiring at the forefront of RNA therapeutics, a rapidly growing and dynamic field. Hiring an apprentice meant they could find employees who were aligned with taking a more technical route within their careers. Now with around 7% of their workforce being apprentices, George says the biggest impact has been that the more senior members of the team now have a lot more time to focus on their research. As I glanced through my phone, a particular picture caught my attention, transporting me back to my undergraduate days. During my industrial training at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State, I had the privilege of completing a six-month internship. The memory of receiving my acceptance letter still brings tears of joy to my eyes, a moment I will forever cherish. I am deeply grateful to the then Heads of Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), Chemistry, and Laboratory Technologist for this invaluable opportunity. My time at UNIMED was profoundly enriching. I worked alongside B.Sc. students on various projects, diving into the fascinating world of research. Our practical sessions were rigorous, filled with readings and meticulous observations. One notable experience was collaborating with a chemistry student on extraction techniques using a rotary evaporator and Soxhlet apparatus. Achieving our goals required persistence and patience, but it was immensely rewarding. I gained hands-on experience with several pieces of equipment, including the UV spectrophotometer, rotary evaporator, fume cupboard, and more. As my internship neared its end, with just two months remaining, I felt a surge of confidence and accomplishment. I was elated at my newfound ability to operate numerous instruments and conduct comprehensive research. Lessons Learned: 1) Openness to Learning: Acknowledging my weaknesses allowed me to seek guidance from staff and students more knowledgeable than myself. This humility and willingness to learn were crucial for my growth. 2) Networking, Opportunities, and Human Capital: I made significant connections with high-profile individuals, explored various opportunities, and pushed myself beyond my perceived limits. 3) Value System: Through this experience, I became more valuable in my field, enhancing both my skills and my professional worth.

However, even with this degree, you'll need to complete work-integrated learning, which means you need an internship at an accredited pathology lab such as Pathcare Laboratories, Lancet Laboratories, or Ampath Laboratories. Great post Seanokeng Mole In regards to studying Biomedical sciences at a University of Technology, you are absolutely right. At first Year of study, student are registered at HPCSA as student medical technologists. In their last year of studies and all modules passed, student medical technologist you go to the lab to complete an experiential training. A report is then sent by laboratory manager to the Institution to render your experiential training satisfactory. This is compulsory to complete your degree. Once degree is confired. Students then secure an internship with laboratory of choice and register with #HPCSA as in intern Medical Technogist and also register with #SMLTSA, a medical technologists council which facilitates and assess the board examination after 18 months of Internship. It's important to note that you only become an independent #medicaltechnologist once you have passed the board exam. Those sucessfully pass the board exam need to take the #SMLTSA certification to #HPCSA & be registered as an Independent practitioner under a specific category eg. Virology Cytology, Histology or microbiology Depending on contractual agreement, laboratories may require the intern to work back the 18 months of Internship before they look for a different organization to work with. In 2021 we began delivering the Technical Apprenticeship in the Life Sciences and Related Science Industries. In this framework, HND (Industrial Biotechnology) students earn vocational qualifications while they are in paid employment in the life sciences sector. All three parties - the students, college lecturers/assessors, and employers - agree that the experience has been wonderfully constructive. From my perspective, it has been encouraging to see the students adapt quickly to their new roles by applying the theory and technical skills honed during their college studies. Importantly, they are thriving in the workplace and making valuable contributions to their organisations. Increased collaboration with life sciences/biotechnology companies has shaped our subject delivery also. The experience recapitulates the power of HND training which focuses on the development of technical skills and scientific communication skills in addition to the theory. The value of medium-sized class cohorts and the ability to provide real mentorship/guidance is also apparent. Furthermore, I am convinced that apprenticeships tap into the very best, comprehensive scientific training and hope that they continue to expand. Alongside Antibody Analytics (with whom three graduates have gained their Technical Apprenticeship) and the IBioIC, we have produced a case study discussing apprenticeships from various perspectives. I am sharing here the perspective of Kirsty Patterson, a former apprentice and current Junior Scientific Support Operative at Antibody Analytics.
