I am excited to share that I will be spending my summer in Knoxville as a SMaRT Program Intern, focusing on the AI/ML Accelerated Neutron Scattering Experiments of Quantum Magnets project. This initiative is a collaboration between the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, specifically within the Neutron Science Division and Quantum Science Center. Under the mentorship of esteemed professionals Jiangxu Li, Yulin Shen, and Ting Bao, our team is pioneering the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance neutron scattering experiments. These experiments are crucial for advancing our understanding of quantum magnets, particularly highly frustrated magnets, which are potential candidates for revolutionary quantum technologies. My role involves several key responsibilities: 🔸 Creating a 'descriptor' for electron densities within crystallographic structures, allowing us to represent these electron densities in a numeric form that can be used in machine learning models for predicting various characteristics of materials without having to solve intense equations. 🔸 Developing code to efficiently read and construct a database of solid-state materials using parallel computing. 🔸 Learning and applying quantum mechanical theory relating to solid-state physics. This position not only allows me to apply my background in physics and computer science but also prepares me for future challenges in the field of quantum science and technology.

Meet Tsai-Ni (Jenny) Chen, one of ALCF’s summer students. Jenny is a rising junior studying Computer Science at Purdue University. This summer, Jenny is working on chipStar, a compiler and runtime infrastructure for Argonne National Laboratory's Aurora #exascale supercomputer. Collaborating with ALCF staff, Jenny has made significant progress in improving chipStar’s performance and uncovering valuable insights into its usage and the potential challenges #HPC application developers may encounter. "During the internship, I gained a lot of knowledge and experiences in how the HPC field works, what real-world issues are there, and most importantly, I was able to witness how experts from around the world are working together to push the limits of the HPC world. A year ago, I participated in a quantum computing hackathon, and I was truly amazed by how it works. Recently, Udacity had just added a course on quantum computing, and I was fortunate enough to manage my time and take this course. Now, I am eager to pursue internships to gain more skills and apply quantum computing to projects that make our lives easier.
