New urban stormwater policies treat rainwater as a resource U.S. cities are revamping how they handle stormwater to reduce flooding and capture rainfall and recharge aquifers. New policies reflect a change in mindset from treating stormwater as a nuisance to be quickly diverted away to capturing it as a resource. U.S. urban areas generate an estimated 59.5 million acre-feet of stormwater runoff per year on average, equal to 53 billion gallons a day. That much water is equal to 93% of the country’s total municipal and industrial water use. What‘s one immediate action we can take to build our resiliency infrastructure more quickly and effectively? Let’s pass state legislation this session and give NYC capacity to build better! Great panel at yesterday’s Waterfront Alliance #WaterfrontConference — we all benefit from sharing lessons learned on the nitty gritty with procurement, contract models, and project delivery. These heavily regulated frameworks are the foundation to complete our complex projects and meet demands of a changing climate and urban environment. An expanded alternative delivery toolkit gives us the right tools for a wide variety of jobs, ranging from complex storm water management to spongey infrastructure embedded in our public spaces — and, energy retrofit renovations that make our buildings more resilient, too. Tools like Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build and CM-Build make our public work more efficient and streamlined, and facilitate better engagement: from integrating community feedback and end user maintenance needs to engaging contractors early for constructability input and workforce development. Let’s get #BuildBetterNYC bills passed in Albany this session. cc: Alexis Taylor Carly Foster AICP, CFM Dennis Reinknecht and shoutout to badass marine biologist and water systems education expert Carrie Roble it was such a treat to see you!
