Overseas runners will be in Hong Kong this week for a major event. The 26th staging of the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon takes place this weekend, with some 74,000 road runners for various distances, but it's not the event I am referring too. An impressive 1,700 overseas ultra-runners will be here for the 14th edition of the Hong Kong 100 ultra-marathon - that's 55% of the allowed entry spots. How many events would jump to have that number to satisfy a KPI?! The Standard Chartered Marathon reported 500 runners came from overseas in 2023 - the race being capped at 37,000 total runners as Hong Kong events emerged post-pandemic. Given the access to trails and the spectacular scenery we have, it's not hard to see why trail races have become popular over the last decade, in parallel with the global growth of trail running. Conceived and first staged in 2011, the HK100 has led the way in Asia and is now a must-do, bucket list race for aspiring and seasoned ultra runners. This year it is also the inaugural event of the World Trail Majors series - which is made up of 9 iconic, global ultra-trail races coming together for the first time. 20 years ago, race organisers in Hong Kong would avoid scheduling their event the same weekend as the Standard Chartered Marathon. Not now, with trail and ultra race registration quota's in demand several times over. Remy Gogoll asked 'What's been your favorite moment so far' on my post after the Olympics. I thought it was a question worth sharing and to see what your favorite moment is too. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There were so many amazing moments to choose from and undoubtedly a load of back stories, which we did not hear, that would elevate our perception of performances to another level. The three that resonate with me: 1. The calmness shown by Tom Pidcock whilst waiting for his wheel to be replaced after puncturing in the lead of the Mountain bike race and then getting back on to chase down the lead. (Totally different to how Remco reacted in the road race). Lots of us can learn from his composure during that moment. 2. Sifan Hassan going for and achieving a crazy treble, bronze in the 5000 and 10,000 mtrs then a Marathon Gold. Truly you can push yourself further than you know. 3. Then the resilience of Kinzang Lhamo (Bhutan)to finish the marathon and the support of the crowd. She has won Sky races in Bhutan, 5 days over 100 miles each day, but running at lower levels unaccustomed to the heat and humidity shows a great mindset. Sometimes it does take all you have to finish and to not give up on the way. I know that everyone will have moments that truly resonated, and they will be different to mine. Selangor King of Mountain 2023 Last Sunday, I took part in, Selangor King of Mountain 2023, a cycling race with an elevation gain of 1,237 meters. I successfully overcame my weaknesses in climbing. I didn't set any specific targets from the start, but achieving a Personal Best (PB) is an accomplishment in itself, signifying self-improvement. Again, I'm not in competition with others; I'm competing with myself. Climbing has always been a challenge for me, so I had to push myself. Moreover, I had very little mileage and absolutely no hill training in the two weeks leading up to the Selangor King of Mountain (KOM) race. Lesson learned! Overall, the mission was accomplished. I enjoyed the atmosphere and set a new personal best. Prior to this, I've participated in several cycling events like the OCBC Race, Grand Fondo New York KL, Lekas Race, and even the world's largest duathlon race, the Powerman, June this year. More races and competitions to come, Inshallah. The most important point here is to challenge myself, overcome weaknesses, and step out of your comfort zone.
