Medical professionalism is instilled from the first day of medical school, emphasizing the duty of doctors to uphold patient trust. However, the vague nature of “professionalism” often poses challenges, particularly for Black and brown students or those diverging from the historical stereotype of who should be a doctor. Research published in The New England Journal of Medicine highlights the disparities faced by diverse medical school residents, demonstrating how opaque rules and subjective interpretations often result in discriminatory outcomes. In 2015-16, 20 percent of medical school trainees dismissed from their residency were Black, although Black students make up only 5 percent of residents, according to data from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, or A.C.G.M.E. Unprofessional behavior, too often, becomes a catch-all term, encompassing actions as innocuous as posting a picture of yourself in a bathing suit or wearing a ""Black Lives Matter"" sweatshirt in the emergency room. It's important for us to redefine professionalism in medical education, shifting the focus from superficial criteria to values such as patient-centered care, integrity, and truth-telling. By doing so, we can create a more equitable and inclusive environment for future healthcare professionals and more culturally competent care for patients. Most faculty working in simulation are committed to the Center for Medical Simulation at Harvard's 'Basic Assumption' that recognizes all learners as intelligent, capable, and eager to do their best. This powerful belief has the potential to transform nursing education across all settings—classrooms, clinical environments, and simulation labs. Its impact is truly profound! By assuming the best in their students, faculty foster a supportive and positive atmosphere that boosts confidence and encourages active participation. Open and respectful communication becomes the norm. This not only enhances learning but also models professional interpersonal skills critical in nursing.  Students feel valued and understood, which increases their engagement and commitment to learning. The impact is not limited to students. Faculty who practice this assumption also benefit by developing more effective teaching strategies and experiencing greater job satisfaction. An assumption is a belief or idea that is accepted as true without proof or through evidence. It is a premise on which further reasoning or actions are based. Are you a believer?

The article from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) discusses how medical students can add value to medical practices through effective precepting. Physician assistant students can add value in the same way. It highlights seven strategies to involve students meaningfully: 1. Patient Care Opportunities: Engage students in clinical tasks rather than non-essential duties. 2. Shared Teaching Responsibilities: Involve the entire care team in student education. 3. Workflow Integration: Adjust workflows to allow students to contribute before, during, and after patient visits. 4. Panel Management: Assign students a panel of patients to follow throughout their rotations. 5. Community Health Involvement: Encourage students to participate in local health initiatives. 6. Quality Improvement Activities: Let students lead or participate in quality improvement projects. 7. Longer Teaching Relationships: Advocate for extended student placements to foster deeper integration and learning. These approaches aim to enhance patient care, improve student learning, and demonstrate the importance of team-based care [1].
