Individuals with #autism often experience challenges in processing auditory information, leading to difficulties in understanding spoken language. Enhancing the brain's ability to process sound stimuli is a promising approach for improving #communication skills and general functioning in autism. Research in animals has shown that synchronized vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) combined with auditory stimuli can promote significant changes in the brain's auditory networks, enhancing the effectiveness of auditory therapy. We were honored to host Dr. Crystal Engineer, a leading researcher from The The University of Texas at Dallas, as a speaker at Symphony 2023. Dr. Engineer and her team are at the forefront of investigating the use of VNS paired with sound to address speech processing impairments in autism. My latest research on epilepsy seizure prediction has been published in Scientific Reports and is already fully available for anyone interested in reading it. The article explores the existence of a set of chronological brain events that precede epileptic seizures, employing knowledge from network theory. It presents seizure prediction models using machine learning approaches and considering two post-processing techniques to handle pre-seizure temporality. This work results from the effort of a scientific group composed of me and the following exceptional researchers: Mauro Pinto, Mariana Tavares, Fábio Lopes, PhD, Ana Oliveira, and Professor Cesar Teixeira.

New funding will allow researchers to uncover new information about the changes that occur in the developing brain during late childhood and adolescence, with a focus on both neurotypical and neurodivergent development. 🔬 A Wellcome Discovery Award has been awarded to @Cardiff University to lead a cutting-edge new research project, together with University of Cambridge and the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour in The Netherlands.
