Naomi from our Powell River and qathet Regional District office visited Blueberry Commons last week to discuss food security in the area. Around 30 people attended the event to share ideas and knowledge, as well as farm opportunities. Among the attendees was Sara Dent (pictured with Naomi), co-host of the event and co-founder of Young Agrarians, an organization that supports young farmers as they attempt to start and develop farming businesses. We see that the world around us is changing. Consumers are becoming more critical about their food. They want more transparency on how food is produced and on the welfare of the animals. 🐄 We cannot and will not ignore this. The reality is that farming and society have lost sight of each other over time. That’s why we need to bring farmers and consumers closer together. 👥 In this short video, Corina van Mourik – Dieleman, shares her vision on the role of farmers in global food production. #farmofthefuture #lely #consumerbuyin

Sometimes we lose focus of the human side of economic and food security when working toward systematic change. This report is an excellent framing of what folks are actually dealing with; reduced wages, increasing rent, expensive childcare (to name a few). Pandemic-era policies implemented a multi-system approach, which led to a reduction in poverty and food insecurity. My hope is that we build and expand on what we learned during the pandemic and make lasting progress on such necessary endeavors.
This report from the Capital Area Food Bank is striking to say the least. It's a very impactful illustration of the factors leading to food insecurity and what practical solutions exist that just need additional support. Just a few highlights: Universal school meals reduce food insecurity and improve attendance, among other benefits. There's a lot to try around "Food is Medicine" initiatives, like expanding Medicaid to cover food assistance programs. Pandemic-era increases to SNAP benefits should be reintroduced and expanded. While working on food insecurity issues with Maine's Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry in 2021, many of the strategies listed in this report were implemented and shown to reduce food insecurity and poverty across the state. There's so much that can be done to improve the lives of children and families around food insecurity and economic stability. Many thanks to the Capital Area Food Bank for this compelling report which shines a light on the real-world factors leading to food insecurity in the DMV. https://lnkd.in/empQSnkC

Exploring public dining models that address health inequalities, social isolation and planetary wellbeing.
The Hope Farm statement offers a watershed moment - urging the next government to prioritise an ambitious food and farming strategy within its first 100 days. Signatories include food business leaders, farmer organisations, civil society, and campaigning groups. The Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, through #TheFoodConversation have been asking citizens what they want from food and unlike the much rolled out 'nanny state' narrative that the government are determined we don't want, it turns out that we do. We need a government willing to take ambitious and immediate action. This statement is timely and calls for six clear actions, drawing on a wealth of evidence, including the National Food Strategy.
