Congrats to Assistant Professor Jacquelyn Pless for being named one of Poets&Quants 2024 Best 40-Under-40 MBA Professors! 👏 Professor Pless originally worked across the private and public sector, focused on energy policy and public finance. Her switch to academia was inspired by the realization that, "innovation is at the heart of solving some of the world’s biggest challenges..." "Being at a business school provides the opportunity to do research on issues that I find stimulating, challenging, and important without getting lost in an ivory tower." Her research interests are in the economics of innovation, energy and environmental economics, and public economics. In particular, her research explores the drivers of innovation for social progress with a focus on energy and environmental innovation. 🔎 📃 CIVICA recently selected eight innovative collaborative research projects across its partner institutions, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to address contemporary issues. 🇪🇺 Our very own postdoc Dr. Philipp Darius and Centre Director Prof. Danie Stockmann together with Professors Drew Dimmery and Simon Munzert (Hertie School Data Science Lab) will continue working on the "European Polarisation Observatory". 📱 The project aims to measure ideological dynamics across social media platforms and investigate the impact of algorithmic recommendations on user exposure to diverse viewpoints. 📊 It seeks to apply these insights to understand and address polarization on issues like economics, immigration, and perceptions of elites, spanning disciplines such as media studies, social movements, and political analysis across European countries. I often receive questions about how I manage to direct an international dual master’s program while leading a research lab. The common suggestion is to focus on one, but in my view, research and education, especially in the realm of policy making, are intrinsically linked. It is this synergy between research and education that not only enriches our understanding but also prepares the next generation of policymakers to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time. With the invaluable support of our distinguished faculty, I’ve had the privilege to guide our program towards becoming a flagship initiative that bridges the Trans-Pacific region with Western perspectives. This has not only expanded our students’ horizons but has also immersed them in addressing some of the world’s most complex social issues, empowering them to be part of the solutions to global challenges. As we continue to grow and evolve, the integration of research with education remains a cornerstone of our program. We welcome economists/social scientists/data scientists/policy experts who are passionate about making a difference through education to reach out and join us in this exciting journey. At the end of my second year as a student of European Economic Studies, I chose to explore the mutual elements between the Marxian’s theory of labor and exploitation and feminist critiques of women’s exploited domestic labor. How is such crucial part of society’s economic development left out when it comes to financial compensation and acknowledgment? Is it normal or normalised? In this seminar paper, I included real-life data, analysis, interpretation and easy-to-follow yet strong arguments to support my theory. The support I got from my mentor was essential as I was guided and mentored regarding research and gathering valid information and evidence while being independent when it comes to completing the puzzle parts myself! If you decide to read it, I hope you’ll be enlightened as much as I was during the research!

How can innovative research ideas work in the real world and inform policy decisions? A recent study published in Nature by CBE Professor John List introduces ‘Option C Thinking’, a groundbreaking research model designed to produce policy-based evidence from the early stages of a project. “There is no single quality that distinguishes ideas that have the potential to succeed at scale. This has drawn scholarly interest and led to a field of research known as open strategy. In this paper, we problematize how open strategy research deploys diversity and inclusion without engaging with the diversity and inclusion literature that offers a more differentiated understanding of these concepts. We build on this literature to elucidate how most open strategy studies follow a business case approach wherein inclusion, and implicitly also diversity, are theorized based on their impact on strategy outcomes. We show how engaging with the diversity and inclusion literature allows open strategy scholars to move from the business case towards an alternative, equity-based approach. Adopting an equity-based approach widens the themes addressed in open strategy research to the reproduction of power relations and sustained inequalities in strategy making and thus contributes to a more societally meaningful and relevant understanding of diversity and inclusion in the strategy field. #BusinessCase #diversity #EquityBasedApproach #inclusion #OpenStrategy
