I often get asked how to identify the right collaborations. 🤔
It’s a great question because collaboration is more than just a union of entities.
Collaboration is the authentic, intentional convergence of people, places and things to create value and seize opportunities.
In a nutshell...
✅ The right collaborations spark trajectory pivots for your own business, the business you're working with, and your hero target – everyone wins together.
They're aimed towards creating a bigger, better future.
❌ The wrong types of collaborations are those that feel forced.
For instance, if someone is pitching you or just wants you to put your name down on something, it’s something you should avoid at all costs.
When it comes to collaboration, do your own assessment:
Understand the vision, project the outcome, get clear on the benefits, and only take opportunities with like-minded, hardworking people who you want to do business with.
This is how collaboration comes together in a way that is authentic and seamless.

Collaboration, please - Shaken, not Stirred!
Collaboration Requires Intention.
Through research, Steven Yaffee from the University of Michigan, found the following benefits of Collaboration.
1. Generates wiser decisions through the understanding of complex, cross-boundary problems via shared information.
2. Promotes problem solving rather than procedural decision making.
3. Fosters action by mobilizing shared resources to get work done.
4. Builds social capital by building relationships and understanding.
5. Fosters ownership of collective problems by valuing participation and shifting power downward.
The next time you're preparing to collaborate, Ramp up your Collaboration by using a collaboration tool called Remember The Future.
-- For this exercise, a facilitator asks project stakeholders to imagine that an upcoming project, release or iteration has been successfully completed. Then ask the stakeholders to look back and describe what steps or actions created the successful outcome.
-- 20 min Time Box = For the first part of the exercise, stakeholders will work individually and write their success steps (e.g, deliverables, processes) on sticky notes that were completed to make the project a success. Once everyone is done, place the sticky notes on a wall.
-- 20 minute Time Box = Then as a team, work together to group the sticky notes into associated clusters and remove any duplicates. During this time, stakeholders can clarify the meaning of their sticky notes.
The Magic: This allows stakeholders to “see” each teammate’s definition of success and reveal any expectations and interdependencies not explicitly stated or previously understood.
The alignment you gain helps establish a firm foundation for your project.

When entering a partnership conversation, shift the focus from "I" and try leading with a them focus, "What are you looking to achieve? How are you or your organization prioritizing partnerships?"
