Here are some valuable programs and initiatives designed to assist our Texas veterans: 1. **Texas Veterans Commission (TVC)** - **Employment Services**: TVC offers job placement assistance, resume building, and job fairs specifically for veterans. - **Education Benefits**: Learn about the Hazlewood Act, which provides eligible Texas veterans with education benefits at public institutions. - **Health Care Advocacy**: TVC helps veterans navigate the VA healthcare system to ensure they receive the medical care they deserve. 2. **Veterans Land Board (VLB)** - **Home Loans**: VLB provides low-interest land, home, and home improvement loans to Texas veterans. - **Veterans Homes**: Quality long-term care homes are available across Texas for veterans and their families. - **Cemeteries**: The VLB also offers free burial services in state veterans cemeteries. 3. **Operation Finally Home** - This nonprofit organization builds mortgage-free homes for veterans and their families, providing much-needed stability and security. 4. **Combined Arms** - Combined Arms is a collaborative impact organization that connects veterans to holistic resources, including mental health services, professional development, and social support networks. 5. **Hiring Our Heroes** - Through job fairs, fellowship programs, and digital resources, Hiring Our Heroes helps veterans transition into civilian careers. 6. **Texas Workforce Commission (TWC)** - TWC provides veteran-specific career services, including the Texas Veterans Leadership Program which helps veterans reintegrate into the civilian workforce. 7. **Wounded Warrior Project** - Offering a range of programs from mental health support to career counseling, Wounded Warrior Project is dedicated to the well-being of veterans. 8. **Mission Continues** - This organization empowers veterans to continue their service through community impact projects, fostering leadership skills and civic engagement. Recently, I had the privilege of attending a career fair, featuring exhibitors from a wide range of organizations, including the NHS, UK Government Civil Service Office, The British Army, National Careers Service, and many more. Here are some key takeaways from these organizations and others not listed 👇 📌 NHS (National Health Service): Engaging with representatives from the NHS shed light on the vast array of career opportunities available in healthcare. From clinical roles to administrative positions, the NHS offers diverse pathways for individuals passionate about making a difference in people's lives. 📌 UK Gov Civil Service Office: The UK Government Civil Service Office showcased opportunities for individuals interested in public service and policymaking. Exploring roles in diplomacy, policy analysis, and public administration highlighted the impact one can have on shaping government policies and serving the public interest. 📌 The British Army: Representatives from the British Army provided insights into careers in the military, emphasizing leadership, teamwork, and personal development. The Army offers diverse roles across various specialties, from engineering to healthcare, HR & finance, offering unique opportunities for personal and professional growth. 📌 National Careers Service: The National Careers Service offered valuable resources and guidance for individuals navigating their career journeys. Their commitment to providing personalized support and career advice reaffirmed the importance of seeking guidance and support in achieving career aspirations. We are excited to be #InTheNews for our Record Sealing event in Fort Smith. Along with our partner, Chance for Change, we were able to host our first “Arkansas Reentry Integrated Support Expo.” The expo allowed us to help so many Arkansans with their record-sealing needs while also providing other opportunities from various vendors for Amnesty (misdemeanor warrants dropped and fines reset), Housing Assistance, Mental Health Services, Driver Control, Second Chance Job Fair, Adult Education Opportunities and Recovery Assistance. "It opens doors and opportunities. It helps you find employment. It helps you find housing. It tells you what your next steps are. It gives you the know-how to do those things that you are being required to do," Felicia Lyons, the founder and CEO of Chance for Change, said. "Because if you don't do those things, guess what? Great day at Career Transition Partnership Careers Fair in Bristol yesterday! We had the opportunity to speak with many service leavers, each with unique backgrounds and aspirations. Here are some highlights: ✅ Diverse Backgrounds: We met individuals from various branches of the military, each bringing a wealth of experience and diverse skill sets. Many had technical and leadership skills, honed through years of service, which they were eager to translate into civilian roles. ✅ Career Aspirations: A significant number expressed interest in industries like cybersecurity, project management, engineering, and logistics. Some were looking to leverage their existing skills directly, while others were keen on retraining for new careers. ✅ Challenges Faced: Common challenges included translating military experience into civilian job market terms, understanding new industry jargon, and navigating the often unfamiliar landscape of civilian job applications. Throughout our conversations, we focused on offering tailored advice and support: ✅ CV and Interview Tips: We provided insights on how to effectively communicate military experiences in a way that resonates with civilian employers. ✅ Networking Strategies: Encouraged service leavers to build and leverage professional networks, including utilizing platforms like LinkedIn. ✅ Career Matching: Discussed how to identify roles and industries that align with their skills and interests, emphasizing the importance of researching potential career paths.
