Yesterday I had the pleasure of attendance and inclusion in our Impact Futures operations and quality roadshow 2024. Impact Futures UK The Childcare Company First Response First Aid Ltd This was a fantastic opportunity to take a day out of the academic calendar to look inside the organisation and honour the talent amongst the teams. As an Inclusion lead and an advocate for positive social action, mental health and well being, this was a privilege. However, whilst this was one sensational layer of the day and it’s offerings, what was even more special was the venue by which the event took place and it’s history as a contributor to equality. The drive for equality continues. The perplexities of what that looks like are shaped by the ever evolving landscape of inclusion itself juxtaposed against the ever evolving world. In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation served as a major contributor to the emancipation of slavery and the movement towards abolishing racism and race discrimination. Yesterday, the awards were held at the Birmingham Town Hall. In 1835, prior to the proclamation, the first of many anti-slavery meetings was held at this very venue in which the statement … “Is is easy to say what shall be done”… features amidst a firm statement that intention must be followed by action. For years to come, this town hall would stand as a pivotal consistent space where the Birmingham anti-slavery society, on both a national and international footing, would take a lead role in petitioning against slavery. Yesteday, inside of all of the lights, trophies and glamour, was at the core, a wonderful celebration of humanity and education. In the investment of shaping a better and more fair world we must consider how working together is always better than working apart. We must advocate for and against injustices and we must do so with radical love, compassion and humility. We still have a long way to go in the world but what is wonderful is that we want to change it for the better. Collective action and humanity, shaped by love and celebration for our unity are absolutely the best ways forward to a fair and just society. #eqaulity #freedoms #radicallove

In our work with the people and communities on socioeconomic and political #margins, we routinely experience the significance and impact of #datapoverty. Perhaps an overwhelming majority of us consider it a 'lack', a gap, that will be filled one day. That day doesn't come for most of us, especially if we work with an intersectional lense. This is because, perhaps, an overwhelming majority of us do not realize that the unavailability of certain data maybe systemic, performing a certain role for a certain system that rules our everyday lives. All absences aren't accidental gaps. Enabling citizens, and the disenfranchised, to generate and use data as a tool to advocate for their cause is as effective as it's rare, especially in South Asian contexts. While working in the slums of Bombay, I have seen its transformational role, both during the 'normal times' of inhuman existence and the pandemic when hunger and death became quotidian affairs. We saw that if you are not there in the government register, you don't exist. In a democracy, to live is to be counted. (I tried to highlight it through some of my writings and numerous sound bytes to national and international news outlets. Obviously, I didn't do a 'decent enough job'). People working with #informalworkers, #migrants, #slumdwellers/#urbanpoor, #DNTs, #transgenders, #sexworkers, #childlabourers, #childbrides, persons with #disability, etc. have great possibilities if they could 'transform' their stakeholders into active citizens/political individuals who would generate data and bring their struggles into the #public discourse. Today, I came across this: '#Citizen contributions to #data, broadly defined as the engagement of citizens in multiple processes in the data value chain, is increasingly recognized as critical to helping overcome many data challenges of our times.' 'The initiative, known as the Collaborative on Citizen Data, aims to bring together partners from all communities within national data ecosystems to achieve two main objectives: Filling critical data gaps on groups that are often less visible in data, such as migrants, persons with disabilities and indigenous populations among others and improving data on gender issues, to ensure their experiences and needs are reflected in the data for the implementation and review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Enhancing citizen participation in government decision-making and further advancing values such as fairness, inclusiveness, openness, and transparency in statistics.' https://lnkd.in/dXCb8_Nq I'll be delighted to speak with you if you live, work in this space. Cheers!

I’m excited about the updates in the new UDL guidelines version 3.0! It seems to have evolved from a disability inclusion framework to one that’s more broadly inclusive, fit for more diverse audiences. That’s important, because people are intersectional, and disabled people are as diverse and complex as anyone else. The guidelines feel less Western-centric, making space for more ways of knowing, acknowledging identity as part of learning. Its roots in the social model of disability have sunk deeper, playing more responsibility on design and delivery rather than on students to self-manage. The increased emphasis on emotional aspects of learning, including emotional safety, is a step forward. I love new phrases like “challenge exclusionary practices”, “address biases” and “cultivate understanding and respect across languages and dialects”. UDL seems to have critically reflected on itself, its purpose and its audience, leading to an impressive transformation that takes place in many small details. What do you think? #UDL #equityinHE

April 14th to 20th is Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Week in Colorado! With a spotlight on National AT Awareness Day on April 17th. Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Day commemorates the importance and vital role AT plays in the lives of people with disabilities. This day reinforces the necessary support and funding the federal government provides to ensure people receive the assistive technology necessary to engage in education, employment, and community living. Assistive technology allows individuals with disabilities to be included in their communities and in inclusive classrooms and workplaces and these devices are necessities, not luxury items. National Assistive Technology Awareness Day also provides an opportunity to commend assistive technology specialists and program coordinators for their hard work and dedication to serving individuals with disabilities who are in need of finding the proper assistive technology to meet their individual needs; and professional organizations and researchers dedicated to facilitating the access and acquisition of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities in need of assistive technology devices. What kind of AT can you think of that enables individuals to do things independently? #creatingcommunicators #k9speechie #ashaigers #atinei #cci #caninecompanionsservicedog #weareindepdence #facilitydog #authenticcommunication #aacfun #aactherapy #aacassessment #privatepracticeslp #speechielife #aacslp #speechlanguagepathology #aac #itsaboutconnection #preverbal #nonverbal #betterworldwithafacilitydog

Our recent consultative webinar brought together representatives from OPDs in India, Pakistan, and Nepal to discuss the most pressing challenges faced by persons with disabilities in the region. Key issues raised: 🏛 The need for greater political participation of persons with disabilities. 💰 The importance of disability-responsive budgeting. 🌊 The urgent need for inclusive disaster risk reduction (#DRR) strategies. 🧒 Unique challenges faced by youth with disabilities and underrepresented groups 🌏 The necessity for climate resilience initiatives that consider the diverse needs of South Asia’s disabled community. Participants also learned how they can engage with and benefit from participation in GDS, including contributing to and shaping commitments at the national and global levels. The session concluded with an interactive discussion where participants shared their expectations for the commitments they hope to see from their national governments at #GDS2025. We thank the panelists and participants for their valuable insights. Stay tuned—similar webinars for OPDs in Latin America and the MENA region are coming soon! #CommitToChange
