TowerCares Foundation recently donated $20,000 to local food banks: $5,000 each was provided to Anne Arundel County Food Bank, Capital Area Food Bank, and Howard County Food Bank; and, $1,000 each was given to Caring Cupboard, Celestial Manna, Community Crisis Center, Meals on Wheels Central Maryland, and NCEON. #towercares #towerstrong

We now estimate that we would need to spend twice what we originally budgeted to spend on food this year to meet the ongoing need. This leaves us with a critical gap between the amount of food people in our community need and the amount of food we can provide. Referring people to other food pantries is not the answer, since they are all facing the same critical challenges we are. It is a very difficult and disturbing truth for all of us. While we are deeply concerned, we remain hopeful. We have a generous community, tremendous volunteers, and a skilled and committed staff. Together we can make sure people in our community have the most basic and critical of all needs met and that our neighbors don’t have to experience hunger. This year at Christmas, SRL has chosen to support Give Food, a UK charity that’s making a tangible difference by combining data with action to address local and structural food insecurity. Through their innovative approach, they can track and showcase the impact of donations in real terms. For example, the funds from SRL can: Deliver 1 to 1.1 tonnes of food and supplies and provide a detailed online dashboard showing the weight, number of items, and calories donated, along with maps of food bank locations receiving the supplies. Every penny counts. With 100% of donations going directly to food and supplies, their transparency and efficiency are helping make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. I have 2 things for you to ponder: 1 - Last week I was helping welcome people to the Food Pantry for our Wednesday late afternoon/evening hours. In line were people who work in our community, coming after work to shop. I know this because they had uniforms and nametags from area businesses. Some had their kids with them, tired from a long day at school and/or day care. And everyone one of them depend on what is on these shelves to feed their families. 2 - Some of you might remember the panic you felt when you went to the grocery store early in the pandemic and found the thing that you needed unavailable. If you had to shop the food pantry and it was your only option because you were too short on cash from paying rent and all other life expenses to buy food and you got there and there wasn't much on the shelves - can you imagine the fear and panic? The good news is - that as a community - we can actually make it different. We can't change the dynamics that are causing people to need the pantry. (I don't have any tricks in my back pocket to change the economy, to change the housing shortage, to change the cost of day care or someone's income). But we can donate money to a food pantry or buy food to donate and fill shelves. That is in our collective power. I challenge you to to think of a way to make a difference today, and next week and the following week. Even if it's small, it will matter to someone. Dignity first. That’s how North York Harvest Food Bank’s made me feel. Food donations are about more than filling shelves—they’re about honoring the dignity of those who receive or need them. Their bold message caught my attention: "The food bank ≠ the garbage." That's a gem right there! While it uses humor to illustrate a real issue (1991 expired pasta—wow! 😱), it also calls us to reflect on how we give. Two key takeaways: ➡️ Thoughtful giving starts with a simple question: Would I eat this or serve it to my loved ones? It’s a gentle nudge toward support that nourishes, respects, and truly helps our neighbors. ➡️ Posts like this highlight the power of clear, bold communication in driving meaningful change. Over the festive period, we will be once again collecting donations for Dundee Bairns so that families can have the kind of festive season that everyone deserves. We'll be collecting practical things that we all take for granted; namely, toiletries (for people of all ages) and cleaning supplies. For those who want to donate more Christmas-y things, we’re also collecting toys and books (including colouring books, crayons, markers, etc.) wrapping paper and sticky tape. According to Dundee City Council it is estimated that the percentage of children living in relative poverty in Dundee is 27.1% compared to a national rate of 24.5% across Scotland.
