ARCHITECT Vs CIVIL STRUCTURAL ENGINEER Role of an architect is designing a building or facility for functional / operational requirements with effective space utilization, aesthetically appealing, complying building laws & local guidelines and more. Role of a civil & structural engineer is to design a building structurally stable, strong and serviceable with effective utilization of materials, proper considerations of provisions in the code of practice, fulfilling the architectural requirements. Contradiction may arise between them during the course of the design projects. Architects do not like huge sized columns or even columns as it may hinder their appealing ambience design. On the flip side, structural engineers often dislike of certain unrealistic or overly challenging architectural designs that require additional effort to ensure their strength and stability. Both Architects and civil & structural design engineers to work hand in hand for a successful outcome. In the grand scheme of things, (In layman's terms)Structural Engineering is not just the science of arranging structural materials to achieve strength in building projects.The scope goes way beyond that, other objectives are: 1. To achieve strength when creating engineering detail, whilst respecting architectural specifications.When engineering details deviate from architectural specifications, that's a form of 'structural failure' it has to be said. 2. If the structural materials are arranged in quantities that achieve unnecessary strength,well that becomes an over design and the cost of the building project rises unnecessarily.This right there is also another form of 'structural failure' that is not talked about. 3. Whilst there has to be strict adherence to building codes, expected material quality & structural detail during project supervision.There has to be strict conformance to architectural specifications, otherwise the building project risks coming out not as intended in the architectural outlook.If the building outlook on completion doesn't give architectural 3D impression, this there is another form of 'Structural Failure' Great are the Structural Engineers who shall solve problems created by architects. The day they override architects and solve problems their own way they shall seize to be Structural Engineers.Not only shall they seize to be engineers but they shall create ugly cities and seize to serve the client needs that are presented by architectural specifications. In essence a layman cannot judge a good structural engineer on titles or certificates..But, comparing completed projects versus the intended look of the building presented by the architects, whilst paying attention to structural material budgets used to complete the project. In conclusion 'Structural Failure' is not just in material failure and collapse of buildings but it is also in a failed material budget and a failed building appearence too. Food for thought
