Last week, Ports Australia had the privilege of visiting our valued members Port Phillip Sea Pilots Pty Ltd in Queenscliffe, Victoria. This incredible organisation is responsible for the safe navigation of large vessels to some of Victoria’s key trading #ports. Yvonne Kaloterakis and Zara Bryan took an inside look at their operations and rode along on a pilot transfer, also called a “step across”.
Did you know that Port Philip Sea Pilots…
👉 have over 180 years of experience in marine pilotage?
👉 operate 24/7 and on demand?
👉 guide vessels carrying billions of dollars worth of goods each year?
👉 play a crucial role in Victoria's $111bn trade economy?
It was truly inspiring to learn about their dedication to safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability, championed by the pilots and crew at Port Philip Sea Pilots.
Thank you to CEO Thorsten Werges, coxswain Michael Randall and deckhand Dean Mitchell for the adventure! 🛥️

Analysis & insights for the superyacht industry, sharing knowledge to understand global trends & developments | Speaker | Yachts Commercial Director at IRI/Marshall Islands Registry | Ambassador for British Superyacht
Great insights from Jason Wynn & Nikki Wynn about deciding on the best choice of registration for their yacht.
This has an interesting US citizen slant and touches on insurance issues faced with the USCG flagged yachts outside of US waters.
Eugene Samarin gives his thoughts in favor of the Marshal Islands under 24m program:
🔹 Best value
🔹 Ease of progress for registering
🔹 Safe flag (White list on Paris MOU)
🔹 No Survey for yachts under 24m
🔹 Global team (including in Fort Lauderdale)
🔹 Digital Certification (can be instantly emailed)
🔹 More financing options (than the more obscure flags)
🔹 RMI vessels can call on the US Navy for assistance
🔹 Lower rate insurance (being a reputable flag)
🔹 No extra scrutiny on arrival in foreign countries
I would argue that Marshall Islands unrivaled 20 years within the USCG's Qualship 21 program would make us the highest quality flag (not CISR), but I will let this one go.... for now 😉!

🔹 Sanctions, Sea and Super yachts🔹
Couldn’t help but do a bit of window shopping whilst having lunch at Antigua yacht club last week 😉 - spying the super yacht Alfa Nero from shore I did a quick Google to delve into its history.
Just a day later, Miles Johnson from the Financial Times sheds light on the fate of Russia’s seized superyachts in a broader article.
It transpired, Alfa Nero, detained in Antigua and allegedly owned by US-sanctioned billionaire Andrey Guryev, is a striking example of the complexities of international sanctions. Although sold at auction for $67M to Eric Schmidt in 2023, the deal collapsed over legal concerns. A new secret owner has reportedly emerged in the past week. This 81-meter vessel underscores the intricate legal and financial challenges faced by governments and buyers alike. As these cases drag on, Alfa Nero highlights the prolonged and costly nature of sanction enforcement. 🌍⚓️ 🌊

Here we go again!!!!
Off again for an active shooter class, this time in Phoenix. It was a quick turn from Hong Kong, and heading straight from Phoenix into another EP job.
How do you all deal with back to back trips?!
I feel that organization and planning are key to make the most of the short time home and ensure you are squared away for the next trip.

Sadly this campaign seems to have lost some legs! We need to regenerate the drive to raise funds for the Captain Bekavac and the legal fight for justice.
Having seen first hand whilst CEO at Wallem how the authorities treat seafarers in these situations I can say with some certainty that “guilty until proven innocent” is the motto for seafarers in these situations.
In our situation the reputable European shipowner was more interested in getting his ship moving than helping release the crew. But one should not really be surprised. While we write with vigor about AI and technology advancing in maritime, it seems seafarers right go backwards or at best standstill.
Have you contributed to this campaign? Or are you a cocktail party warrior or LinkedIn soldier in the fight against the criminalization of seafarers. Anyone who writes about, talks about, or cares about seafarers should standup and send something. Make an effort not just a tick in the “Day of Seafarers” box. There are 60,000 deep sea ships and $4 a ship has it covered.. so where are the owners and charterers in this campaign.
And yes I have contributed.
