“I would argue that you've got to have more sophistication as an entrepreneur being in a franchise because you've got to hold up a standard that someone else has chosen. You’ve agreed that you wanted that standard or you wouldn't have signed up with them. So there's a mutual agreement in place. If you're an independent owner, you can do whatever you want. The tough reality is that if I owned my own little pizzeria, how would I know if I've got good sales, or if I'm running good food and paper? What would I compare that to, last week? What if a guy was doing the same thing down the street from me, but he was shaving five points off his labor and giving a great customer experience at the same time? You're not going to know that as an independent pizza place, but you'll know that as a franchisee because you're going to be sharing best practices and your numbers with other franchisees doing the same thing you're doing. In franchising, you have to look in the mirror and become a better business person. Iron sharpens iron. Outside of franchising, there are not as many opportunities to get an apples-to-apples comparison with your business operations.” We have a franchising term, “You’re in business for yourself, not by yourself”. Hearing a franchisee share “iron sharpens iron” is a by-product of not being “by yourself”. Yes, you have autonomy when you open a business by joining a franchise system, but you also have accountability. The franchisor is invested in your success.
